    too much oil

this is a pretty stupid question but if you have too much oil in a motor will it smoke when you first start it. thanks for any help

Overfilling an engine with oil will not necessaraly cause smoke but if you filled it up fairly close to a full crankcase then you could have it seeping past the rings into the combustion chamber. The major problem with overfilling your oil is that too much oil in your crankcase will cause air bubbles and those air bubbles will mean less lubrication for your engine.

Now if you happened to get oil spilled on engine parts or exhaust then that might cause smoke as well. What color is the smoke? Blue smoke is a tell tale sign that your burning oil.

With the poor mileage you mentioned an another thread and the white smoke you mention now, I would check to see if the petcock is letting raw fuel into the #2 cylinder.

Mine puts out a lot of water vapour until warm. Summer or winter, I can see it.
