    1983 Suzuki gs750 fuel petcock

    I recently purrshased a 1983 suzuki gs750 at an auction. The petcock is stuck in the reserve position. I removed the clip and took out the knob. Inside I could see a plastic piece. I removed the diaphragm from the back side and could see a piece of metal. I would like to know if the plastic piece can be pushed out or is it fixed. Also,is that piece of metal part of the petcock or did someone put it there?

    The plastic piece is a barrel valve and can be removed by pulling it out from the lever side of the petcock. The metal piece is a rod with a spring built into it that presses on the diaphram to open the prime circuit of the petcock. That spring rod has to be adjusted to the proper length to make the prime function work right. You know you have it right when in the run and reserve position you can't suck air from a hose attached to the fuel port on the petcock. In the prime position you should be able to suck air through the hose. There should be a spring between the barrel valve and the lever.

      Do you have a parts diagram of this? Can I get parts from the dealer or do I have to buy a new petcock? I did not have a spring between the barrel valve and the lever. I think whoever took it apart did not know how to reassemble it.

          Frank, if you want to send the petcock to me and I'll see what I can do to fix it. As long as the metal piece isn't mangled and the diaphram is sound there is no reason it can't be fixed. A substitute spring can be found. There should have also been a conical shaped, lightweight spring between the diaphram and the rectangular plate.

            If worst comes to worst, you can always just ride with the petcock in the "Reserve" position. The petcock on my '83 GS750ES has been as stiff as all get-out since new, so I have been riding on "Reserve" since..... .... ....since 1983. Fortunately, I have never needed the "Prime" position.

                gas leaking

                I have a 1982 GS650E, bike starts and runs pretty good. Problem is that when I stop the bike, the fuel keeps flowing and fills the airbox and drips all over the place. I thought it was the petcock and I just replaced the diaphram, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Any suggestions?

                I have also tried running it in the ON position, it starves. In the prime or reserve postion, it runs okay but leaks like a sieve.
