Shrinking drive cushions ?????

As many people know suzuki uses those rubber drive cushions in the rear wheel to connect the sprocket hub to the rest of the wheel. On my 1980 750 my hub has been riding to far in so there is metal to metal contact .I looked at pics of other peoples wheels and sure enough my hub is in farther than the other ones. so i ordered up new cushions (because the appears to be no other parts involved that can cause this I even checked a suzuki genuine repair manual to make sure my wheel was assembled correctly. Heres my Problem THe old rubbers look and fit like there are brand new !! There are just not quite thick enough to do the job ! do you think its possible they shrink overtime ??? but look perfect :? :? :?

Its possible they have dried over the years enough to shrink in size. I am certain they should be thick enough that there is no metal to metal contact in the cushin drive assembly.

The cussions are their to cussion the forward & reverse direction of the4 wheel NOT the side to side movement You may have a worn axel spacer
or maybe the wrong one???

I agree with you Lynn, the cushions are for forward and back motion. I say there should not be any metal to metal contact because there have been no wear or rub marks due to side to side play in the wheel assembly on any bike I have owned. There is no "give" in a chain, hence the cushions. If the drive were metal to metal on the hub, it would cancel the shock absorbing ability of the doughnuts.

problem solved sqdancer lynn was right on

I feel stupid and lucky at the same time on this problem! After i got the new drie cushions a could tell i was in trouble as the looked the same as the old ones. So i was stumped because ho could the hub still ride on the wheel?
I thought i looked the suzuki breakdown correctly but i goofed i had a part missing ( SINCE I OWNED THIS BIKE SCARRY). IT hit me when i saw a hub on ebay last night and i could see a spacer of sort from the bootom of the hub showing. so i ran home checked again and sure enough the spacer i thought was ih the center of the wheel is not the spacer i thought ther should be this "bearing spacer between the hub bearing and the right wheel bearing.
I dont know who worked on this bike before me but its a big part i dont no how you could forget to put it back in> Any way i so glad i found it before any fast riding this season as i hate to think what could have happened !! 8O
