Thanks Jake. I think the o-ring is toast. I ordered all new seal, o-ring, c-clip the whole works.

The seal that is in it now is completely toasted. it has no rubber left at all. only the bare metal plate. I thought about doing what you said to remove it but was very leary as I didn't know for sure yet or not if you can put a new seal in without splitting the cases. I knew that if I pulled the seal out and could not get a new one in that way that the engine would now have to come apart. I plan on taking this bike to the southern rally in one week so that is out.

Maybe if I am lucky just a new o-ring will stop it or slow it down a bit at a minimum?

As soon as the seal gets here, I'll look at all of that. I'll turn that spacer around too just to be sure.

    Thx man

One more question, have you ever replaced this seal this way yourself? Without splitting the cases?

I was able to install the seal without splitting the case's.

A few things i did see was the edge of the seal would get scrapped off alittle while it was being driven back on with a big socket. You'll need something alittle smaller then the size of the seal to nock it back in. I should of filed down the lip of the case edge around the seal alittle to help it get started. Then I ran some sealant around the edge just in case.

There's no guarantee that it won't leak but it was worth the chance since it only costed me a new seal as compared to splitting the case's.

Well the sealer quick fix idea worked as well as a tuna sandwitch would have. It leaks just the same as ever. When my seal comes in, I will try to install it. If this cannot be done without splitting the cases as some have warned then it will be going on the southern rally ride with the auto chain luber still installed. I just can't park it in any nice driveways

Jammin! Well that is what I needed to hear. I have a benefit too.
I now have you telling me you've done it, plus I have a 38 year vet mechanic
that already assured me it can be done plus said mechanic has offered
for me to come out to the shop, put it on the lift and he will help me pop
it in for free. I just wanted to hear of at least one person who has done
so that I could get a "been there done that" reassurance before pulling old leaky.

          Thx again Jake

If all else fails, I get a pack of those HD diapers

Jake makes a very good point here, chamfer the edge all the way around and it will go in much easer. I had to do that on my front seal and it worked great. I used a piece of thick wall pipe that had been cut straight across that was very close to the diameter of the seal to drive it in. I've had no leaks since I did that.

Awesome! Thx Hap. We have a socket that is the perfect size. I'll use the roto tool with a soft tip to take the edge off first and then hopefully she will just POP right in

              I sure hope so 8-[

I'm no expert but some of my great'est results have come from a hammer and a hacksaw.

Since you got a source for shop tools it should be a piece of cake.

                Good Luck

And about that diaper crack ???????????

                  Tongue in cheek Jake

My GS is leaking oil right now worse than any HD I have ever seen

And where I grew up, I have seen plenty!

Well I ordered all the needed parts as noted above but realize that even if they ship in good time they wont be here in time for me before the rally.

So Paparo found one for me locally. o-ring, c-clip and seal. I am taking the bike out tomorrow night and Joe is going to help me get it in.

I love that guy! In a non-gay sort of way mind you

I am dialing carbs in tonight. Come on you carb guru's, send me your carb tuning mind powers so I can get it right this time!

                    Rock on 8)

I don't think we needed that clarification but it is nice to know

Problem solved. The new seal and o-ring are in. We reshaped and reused the c-clip.

Just a dab of JB on each end of the clip to ensure it wont come out. I am not worried about a little bit of clean up grinding on a rebuild at this point. That whole area is completely chewed up already by the darn screw that came out so it's all good.

I wish I could have video taped him taking the old seal out and putting the new one in. The entire job including opening it up and putting it all back together took less than 15 minutes. He poped that bad boy in there with a n iron dowl rod and a mallet. Tap tap tap. 2 minutes at best. Most of the time was spent by me futzing around buttoning back up the chain and stuff.

Took it for a nice hard test run after leaving Paparo's on my way over to buy the man diner because he didn't charge me a cent for the repair or even the part! 8O

                        No leaks. It is fixed

My old goat can now hold his own bladder again

                        Joe Paparo rocks.
