    GS550 ignition points/condensor

    I have a question for you: do any of you know of a good on-line or mail order supplier for ignition points and condensers? I found Alpha Sports on line, but they want $130+ for EACH of the two points.....YIKES!! And there's no Suzuki shop nearby here in Wyoming.

      WOW! Now that sounds like a complete ripoff to me! I bought the Suzuki tune-up kit at my local bike shop for $39.95 and that was both sets of points and the 2 condensers.

        Make sur to verify which points your biker uses before ordering the 550's used two different types

          Lynn is right, look for a ND logo on the points or on the points plate if not there you have the rip off price points

            An easy way to tell if you have nippondenso or kokosan points is the ND (nippondenso) points are held to the breaker plate with one screw. Kokosan points have two hold down screws. Condensors are the same.

              What year is your 550? ND type points were used only in the early 550 models. If you have an "E" model, chances are you'll need the Kokusan type. And earlfor is correct, the Kokusan type points use 2 screws to hold them onto the plate, and the ND types use only 1 - so go by that.

              A guy on e-bay who gos by the id of georgefix has kits for 27 bucks, with 3 for shipping. He always has a steady supply, and lists them as "buy-it-now". Kit includes 2 points and 2 condensers.

              I ordered through him, he got them in the mail the next day, and they worked great!

              I can't believe someone would charge 130 bucks for those things!! You could get an electronic ignition for that price!

              Have you ever replaced and/or set points? It can be a bit tricky the first time around. Definetely get a timing light. The first time you do it, you won't believe how much easier it is vs. how many paragraphs it takes to explain in the manual! Once you lick it, you'll be able to gap the points and set the timing in about 5 minutes, and you won't even need the manual.

                1978 GS550E Points/Condensors

                I think it was either a mistake on the exploded drawing or I mis-read it. I think the $130+ price was for the breaker plate assembly. I found another place on line that had points for $13.90 for the two-pt set.

                Since mine is the "E," it has the two-screw K-brand points.

                I have installed a few ignition points in my day, having started working on gas engines in 1973. I just wish that one could use a dwell meter to get the points "spot on" like one can with a car! I set the points carefully with a feeler gauge, then close them and run a clean piece of 3x5" card to clean off any oil/grease that might be on the feeler gauges. Then I do a "static" timing with an ohm meter, followed by a running adjustment with a timing light.

                I live at 4000+ feet above sea level. Oftentimes, on cars/pickups we'd set the timing 3 degrees further ahead of the factory settings to allow for better burning of the fuel/air mix since the air is sooooo thin up here. Anybody tried this with a bike?
