GS-450 Oil Leak
I have an oil leak thats coming from my shifter rod where it leaves the case. I bought a new seal, but was wondering if the seal contains a metal ring in it? The reason I ask is I'm having a difficult time getting the old seal out. It just won't pull out of there. It appears that there is a metal ring encased in the rubber seal. Is this true? If I pull the other side cover will I be able to access the shifter rod to push it though the other side? Any help would be appreciated.Tags: None

I'm doing this myself right now, this is the info I got:
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how this seal is going to come out without splitting the case. My seal has a metal lip on it so it cannot be pulled out from the outside.
I think I am going to split the case and try to get some experience under my belt with these engines. It can't be too hard with a Clymer's and the wonderful memebers of this forum. I plan on prepping the bike this week; then taking adavantage of the long weekend to split that case.
Good luck with your project and I'll post something next weekend letting you know how it went for me.

That's strange. When I did my 400 all I had to do was remove the metal strap and yank out the seal. Maybe it wasn't an origional seal but the OEM replacement I got didn't have a metal lip on it. I would consider removing or filing off the metal lip from the replacement seal before pulling the engine apart. My 400 is proof that such a retainer is not necessary when the strap is in place. Maybe you could even order a GS(X)400E seal as it's probably the same size.

I have read that a seal without the lip is not required as long as the engine has a seal retainer, (which mine does).
Unfortunately the original seal on my bike has the lip and I need to split the case to remove it.
It would be nice to use a seal without the lip for future replacement, but I am going to use the part I already have and use this as an excuse to learn about splitting these engines apart.
Thanks for the info!

I don't want to discourage you from working on your bike but this is the wrong time of the year to have it sitting in a bunch of pails. 8) Get a good hold of that old seal and tear it out!The metal lip isn't that thick is it?
Cheers, Steve

True, but there are extenuating circumstances that wont let me ride anyway until I get this fixed. It leaks like a SOB because I tried pulling it out from the outside last season?
I?ll see what I can do over the long weekend coming up.
Best,
David
