Also, on my ride yesterday with my wife, her '73 Honda CB350 got all cranky when she got down to half a tank of petrol. We switched her over to reserve but that didn't seem to make any difference. It's like when the gas gets down to half a tank, she only runs on one cylinder. I managed to get her to a gas station and topped her off with 2 gallons of unleaded and she ran just fine! What's up with that? Sould I look into a petcock rebuild? The shop just cleaned and rebuilt the carbs. Any ideas on what would be causing this odd behavior.

Enhanced assets and other SNAFUs
In discussing Leela this weekend with her previous owners, it has come to my attention that she's been bored out. I thought she had an unusual amount of power for her advertised size (750). 8) I'm looking at doing a full rebuild this winter in my father's heated garage, you know, all seals and gaskets... Having never done this this on any engine naturally, this new knowledge has me even more unsure. Haynes and Clymer don't seem to talk about engines that have been bored out. Are her enhanced assets likely to require anything special? Will the standard gasket set from partsnmore.com work for me or am I going to need something else?

If it was rebuilt that usually means largest sized pistons. The head gasket for a standard size should still fit. You can rering an engine that was punched out but ou have to remove the glaze from the cylinders with a cylinder hone. You need to create a fresh surface for the rings to cut into and match. I would get a book on rebuilding techniques for motorcycles from amazon.com and read it thoroughly.
On an aside if it is not broke don't fix it. I would not tear it completely apart unless something was broken inside the case. The stator gasket and clutch covers are relatively easy to change, the oil pan is not too bad, just messy. But I would not be inclined to open it up unless I had to. You could replace the head gasket if it was leaking without pulling the cylinders, just be careful to not disturb the bottom end.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

The reason I was considering rebuilding it was because I've got oil caked all over the front of the engine. The guy at the shop thought it looked like a tach cable driver seal, but it looks like there's oil leaking around the valve cover gasket too. I figured while I was taking care of the tach driver seal and the valve cover gasket, I' do the head gasket, stator cover gasket, clutch cover, ignition cover, and whatever else comes in the gasket/seal kit from parts-n-more.
Anyone in central PA who has experience doing this stuff would be welcome to come and oversee the work I do with this. I'm planning on finishing out this riding season and doing this in a warm place this winter, maybe after Uncle Sam sends my refund check in February '06 (if I get my taxes done early again).
Perhaps I'll just put my check from Uncle Sam towards something newer that only requires routine maintenance. We'll see...

did they tell you how far it was overbored? that is the key to knowing what will be needed.
if it was a stock over bore (.5mm, 1mm) you can get those from Suzuki or one of the online Suzuki parts dealers you will need to know what the current bore is, if it is within tolerances for the piston size you can just run a hone in the cylinders and use fresh rings with the old pistons (as long as they are ok) if it is a big bore job you will need to know what size and who made it as you may need to contact that company for rings.
I am at the factory limit with my 1000 the next time it goes out of spec I will have to get a stock bore cylinder block and start over or go to a aftermarket kit (wiseco 1085 or 1100) (1532cc is as big as they go for the original GS1000 engine but that is race only)
wiseco makes a 844cc street kit for the two valve 750 and a 816cc kit for the four valve 750

I don't think any of the previous owners that I know had anything to do with Leela's enhancements. Can I measure the cylinder diameter when she's all in pieces and find out that way? What are my options here? :?
Again, anyone in east-central PA that would like to assist me with this, just let me know.
