    UPDATE!!!!

    WOOHOO!!! IT'S FIXED!!!

I followed your instructions Hoomgar, but I used the metal arms of a broken clock we have here at work.

I took my dykes and clipped the flat part of the clock arm into a rectangle.
Then I bent it to shape with my needle nose pliers and fit it over the spring in the switch. I superglued the spring to the little peg that it sits on to reduce any risk of the spring falling out whilst upside down during installation. I also put a drop on the metal-slider piece that I made from teh clock arm. The whole piece was good to go.
I streched out the spring a little to give it some extra tension inside the handlebar and installed.

    VIOLA!!! Worked out just fine!
AND best of all...it cost nothing!!

I'm going to see if I can get out of here early and go get my bike reinspected again.
