    Pingel and teflon tape?

    I have a Pingel sitting on the bench that I guess I am gonna put in the bike. My stock fuel tap has let me down twice now, once before a rebuild kit and once after. I was chatting about using the Pingel a few months ago and how I don't like the screw in mount of the tap itself and that I don't have a gasket for the tank. I have solved the gasket problem, I'm using a piece of fuel line cut flat for that. But the threads on the Pingel are a little munged up. It threads in far enough, but not enough to seat fully to the adapter plate. When I had it on my 81, it would bleed gas a little at these threads. Someone said I could use teflon tape around those threads- was it you Keith Krouse? Can't remember, but I just wanna make sure I am using the right stuff. Don't wanna have to wrench on the bike in NC next week! Won't gas just eat away teflon tape?

    Hmmm...My Pingel came with the teflon tape to use on the threads where it screws into the adapter plate.
    Make sure that you get it into the adapter plate so that the lever is facing the right way for easy access and viewing.

    I bungled that the first time I installed it and had to remove a little of the tape so it would position correctly.

      Pingel recommends using teflon tape. I use Drag Specialties petcocks on my KZ bikes. One has a Pingel adapter plate and the petcock screws into the plate. I have had teflon tape on the thread for over a year and not leaks. On the other test bike, the tank has a 22mm bung and I have had teflon tape on the thread for about 3 years and no leaks.

          Teflon

          I used teflon tape on mine (3 years ago). It didn't make more than a couple of turns so I was concerned but it's never leaked a drop!
          1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

            Well the tap is in! Dry as a bone so far. I used a piece of flat plumbers rubber (it's about a mil thick and red), think that will hold gas as well?

              I've never used plumbers rubbers to seal my tap, but being "plumbers", I doubt the rubber is meant for applications involving gasoline. I suspect it will slowly dissolve. Teflon tape has been fine on mine for 4 years.

                What makes one rubber gasket different from another? Are there different types of rubber?

                  OH YEAH. There are more different types of rubber compounds than there are materials for clothing. :-) Nitrile rubber for example is unaffected by gas. Butyl rubber will turn to black goo in gas, and silicone based rubber will turn to glue/syrup and clog anything it can get to. :-)

                    Jethro, you can probably call Pingel and have them send you a proper adapter-to-tank gasket, along with their blue sealant and application info. Piece of mind.
                    It was me that said the teflon works fine, IF you apply the right amount to the threads. Teflon tape is what Pingel suggests too.
                    If too little tape, the Pingel can turn on you and the teflon will turn brown and then leak eventually. I found this to happen with 4 wraps of teflon tape. But 6 wraps allowed the valve to face out just right, be tight, and no tape discoloration or leaking. The perfect amount varies from bike to bike.
                    And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
                    Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

                      Well, it's not leaking as of this morning. I'm taking my rebuilt stock petcock with me to the NC rally, so if I have a problem I'll just pop that one on. I actually only used 2 wraps of tape and it sits perfect, it is aslo about as tight as I could get it to seat.

                      I called Pingel and they said they would send me a gasket if I told them what the bolt hole distance was for my adapter plate. I was suprised to find they didn't have a chart or something with the GS 1100E on it. That's when I know I'm better off doing it myself, which happens quite a bit these days.

                        Hey Jethro, I remember when I put mine in, I also only put about 2 turns of teflon on it because it was such a tight fit screwing it in...and it has worked just fine for several years.

                        By the way, my wife is also a project manager...are you an engineer?
