    85 gs700e ignition question

    hello everyone,
I have a 1985 gs 700e. I was given the motorcycle about a year and a half ago. I had to do alot of work to it that took quite a bit of time. I was able to ride it a few times and I do enjoy it. Well now to my question. is there an upgrade that can be done to the ignition system. my "little black box" is on the blink and a new one is not too cheap. I was wondering if there was something else out there that can replace the original ignition at a cheaper price.
    Thanks....Ronnie

    G'day Ronnie,

There are indeed plenty of after-market ignition systems and components available... and I'm sure that someone here at the GS Resources can tell you what might be locally available. What part of the world are you living in?

And, what makes you think it's on the blink? The reason I ask is because often you can have what you think is an ignition issue, but it's really a fuel problem -- and so you go barking up the wrong tree, and a potentially expensive one at that. :x

    Mike.

Generally the ignitor either works or it doesn't. I'd be suspect of carbs as well. You can feel as if you've gone through them well enough and they'll still work like crap. They could easily need o-rings.

i live in louisiana, USA. the reason i think its the ignition is that i had my carbs overhauled by motorcyclecarb.com over in georgia. I had all the screws set at a local bike shop. when we were testing it at the shop it failed to start. the mechanic put on an 1983 gs ignitor box so i could drive it home and i later returned the box to him. I thought it was a carb problem at first, so thats why i sent the carbs out to be redone.
