'81 GS 750L is backfiring and only has 1/2 its power
I put new plugs and new coils in it, but that didn't help. Sometimes it regains all power while i am riding it. Runs ok for a few minutes... then back to half power. Does not seem to be heat related. I am new to riding, any suggestions?

There are a couple of other areas to consider.
The fuel filter is one - both any inline fuel filter and those on the inside of the petcock and inside the tank. If the tank is rusty inside, the crud can build up on the in tank filter or in any mesh screens inside the petcock (not sure if this model witll have that or not).
Another often overlooked area is the gas cap. The inside of the gask caps have a small vent hole - these can get clogged (remember how tough is it to pour gas out of a gas can when the little breather hole is still plugged?). This is especially true is the tank has been sealed... If you are running the bike when the bike starts acting up, open the gas cap and see if air rushes in.
Another issue can be using too small a fuel hose or having a kink in the hose. If you don't have clear fuel hose, replace it to get a better view of the gas flow.

thanks
It seems I may have had a couple issues...I bypassed the fuel filter and that helped some...Then I took the carbs apart and sprayed them down and now I'm doing 60 in 2nd gear! I will check for rust in the gas tank also.
