    rectifier location

hi all,can someone please e-mail me a couple of fotos of a 1000ET/ST with the frame covers removed. my rectifier is off an 81 ST and is fixed with 2 mounting bolts wheras the earlier SN/EN are smaller with a bolt through the middle.i took the advice to look up loadsa diagrams from bikebandit, alpha sports etc etc but none have the rectifier location. this is stopping me finishing my rebuild and is pi***ng me off now.the batt box only has fixing points for the cdi unit. Help HELP!!!! .Cheers ,Dave

I don't know how to send pic's. I do have a couple of shots in my '80 GS1000E/ST manual. The reg and rec is one unit, two mounting holes, and it's mounted directly rearward and next to the fuse block. Is this what you're asking?
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

mine are seperate, the reg being the smaller of the two.however, they might bolt back to back either side of the electric board but without trying i dont know if it will obstruct the air filter rear housing unit. Cheers Keith. if you could take a digi photo of the relavent page in your manual, you could attach it to a mail to me . i will send you a pm with my mail add.

Let me get this straight. You have an '81 rectifier (but my manual says the reg/rec are one unit as of '80), but you want to mount it to an '79 or '80 GS1000S?
Don't know if this helps, but the '79 1000E and S have the seperate rectifier mounted pointing about 5:00 from the regulator.
I don't know how to send pic's, but if nobody helps you I'll see if my son can take the pic's and send them. The '80 ST manual pic's are not the best, but do show the cover off and you can see the reg/rec unit.
If he can send the pic's, it would be about 10:00AM my time.

          rectifier location THANKS

thanks to Keith and the S.O.C., the problem was an earlier gen and electric board had been fitted and the guy had put his origional rec/reg on the system too!!!! .there is no place to put the rec/reg on the old type board so it has to locate next to the cdi unit fixed by one bolt only.lesson learnt, never assume anything with an old bike that could be made up with loadsa bits and ALLWAYS use a digicam on stripdown or you will end up cryin in your sleep like the dipstick that first posted this yarn!. without everyones hel both sides of the atlantic i would have spent a lot of cash to have a mobile electrician make me look a bigger idiot. Thanks again, Dave. =D>

I just asked the same question before I spotted this post. Does anyone know if a 79 GS1000L has a single r/r or seperate regulator and rectifier?

            Thanks,
            Joel

              Seperate.

                Thanks.

Can I replace the seperate units with a combined r/r? I did this and it seems to be charging at 12.5v when I rev the throttle instead of 13.5v.

I replaced mine with an Electrex R/R all in one unit. $110, 5 years ago, P/N RR10. I'm happy with it. No more problems.

Yes, you can use a combined unit. Just be sure to connect only the combined unit. Either remove both the faulty regulator and rectifier completely or disconnect both.

Thanks for your help. I've now successfully removed both the original regulator, and the combined r/r that the previous owner installed on the bike (no wonder he couldn't get it to work right). I've now installed a replacement r/r and am up and running.

                      Thanks a lot!
