    GS850 tach problems

The tach on my GS850L suddenly started to 'float'. It moves slowly, but no longer in respect to engine speed. I know the tach is getting input from the cable, because I saw the inserted part revolve when I started the engine. The oil light and high-beam still work, so I doubt it's electrical.

Anyone else had this problem? If you did, were you able to solve it without buying a new tach?

    Thanks,
    Ace.

Shoot a little spray lube in the tach hole and see what happens.

Yeah, clean it all up and lube it properly they don't half get cruddy for an enclosed system, weird really.

Anyway, whenever this has happened to my tacho it normally means the drive cable is on it's way out and cleaning and lubing is just a temporary fix!

My tach was real slow to respond and then to settle. I had the cable off at the engine and chucked it into my drill. Same deal. Took the other end off as well, then spun the drill. Seems the cable was traveling the speed of the drill and instantaneously. So, I took the tach off and opened it up. Delicate in there. What I found was a blob of clear grease on the flywheel portion. I wiped a lot of it off being as gentle as possible. I screwed the cable back into the tach, then hit the drill. Wow, my drill cooks at about 4000 rpm. I had good response getting to 4k and then back to 0. Hope this helps.

When my old tach acted the way yours does, I had to replace the tach.
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

How do you take the tach apart? This is where I stopped because I could not figure how to get into the internal working parts. Does it unscrew from the top or do you need to pry the cover off?

            Thanks in advance.

I took the tach apart. It was clean inside with nothing amiss I could see. It is so delicate in there, it seems like one little spec of dirt in the wrong place...

So, for $260 who needs a tach on this bike anyway. I'm just going to seal up the holes and live without it.

                Thanks all for the help.

                Ace.

Did you looked at the crimped metal part on the cable, the one going in the motor? Mine gets loose after a few years, and revs don't follow. Replacing the cable will do, as I haven't found a way to re-crimp the part without breaking it.

I watched the end of the cable spinning while the engine was running and it seemed pretty healthy. I could not slow it down with my fingers anyway. Plus that wouldn't explain why it goes back to zero so slowly.

But anything is possible. I may replace the cable just to see what happens.

                    Thanks,
                    Ace.
