1980 gs1100 carbs

ok so i have atemped to clean the carbs myself re asemble and the bike still pops when you let off the gas or down shift, also now when i hit about 7000 rpms the bike seems to bog down a little bit, it doesn't seem like it has the power that it had before i cleaned the carbs. From what i saw it has stock jets and it also has a stock air box m but it has the old vance and heines 4 into 1 system on it. I have the air screws adjusted to three turns out. I always thought that popping was a sign of the bike being to lean , but i have tried it 4 turns out all the way down to 2 turns out and its not making a big difference.

I have the same issue on a 82 GS1100E. The popping is caused by a rich idle screw setting and or pilot jet combo. I don't know if you rebuilt your carbs or just cleaned them. I did a complete rebuild....I would suggest new neeedle and seats at a min and make sure you set the float height correctly. I used K&L rebuild kits which even came with new O rings for the air screws. I'm running 122.5 mains and 45 pilots with the air screws out 1.25 turns. Hope this helps. Did it pop before the rebuild ..so what changed is the question and did you sync thge carbs after the rebuild.

i just bought the bike a couple of weeks ago and its popped the whole time. So you think its a rich problem, interesting. No i didn't rebuild them i just cleaned them but they didn't look bad at all. I pulled the plugs after i road and a few are black, I know on most things you want your plugs to be a little brown is that the same for the gs's?

My understanding of popping on deceleration is that air is leaking into the hot exhast system when decelarating and providing enough oxygen to cook off the mix in the exhaust system. I have also heard that under those circumstances, carbon monoxide will burn and convert itself to carbon dioxide.

I am working on jetting my bike right now. I had some popping start also and it was from being to lean. About 1/4 turn to richen the mix fixed it for me. Check for exhaust leaks also. And you need to sync the carbs after any adjustment to get it to run correctly. I have been making a lot of adjustments and syncing definitely makes a difference.
