    2nd Gear

I am having a transmission problem, but only in second gear.

In second the bike idles along fine; if you accelerate very slowly and evenly it is fine all they way to 5K or 6K rpms. However, if you accelerate normally or aggressively it lurches and hesitates violently. And even just cruising, not accelerating, above 6K, same thing, bucking bronco.

All the other gears seem to be fine.

    Any ideas?

Time to live with it or split the cases. Most likley the engaugement dogs on the gear are worn

Second gear dogs and charging system

Yep, the second gear dogs and the charging system are the only weaknesses of the GS's. :?

        sadly your correct LOL

Most any model motorcycle can suffer from the 2nd gear woes, because of the long shift from 1st to 2nd through neutral.
Poor (relaxed) shifting by the rider & or racing/hard or overloaded riding.

many things contribute to the 2nd gear woes.

make sure your sifters adjusted correctly assuring proper fimr positive shifts, will reduce the chances.

Fatigue of the older parts doesnt help

Well, I guess I'll just keep shifting around it until winter, then I'll break open the case.

What kind of parts do I need?

What else should I be inspecting/replacing while I'm in there?

Check all the gears on the barrell, & check your shifter forks/dogs.
Look for worn edges & wear marks where they meet & bent shifter forks.

Replace when in doubt, not worth re-splitting the cases a few miles/months later.

            Good Luck
