    Poots pair of problems

    Hi all,

I'm sorta sporadic with my posting these days, but here goes. READ ON PLEASE!!

    Here are my problems .
    =============================================

#1: I have a charging problem, and am not sure what needs replacement.

With a fully charged battery, I get about 150-200km of good riding, before my battery gets drained. It'll start fine, ill ride a long time, and then it wont restart right after shutdown. It even gets really hard to bump start (needed 2 pushers yesterday)

Im thinking that it could be the regulator/rectifier, but am not sure if it could be the stator?

#1a: The right signals also dont work b/c the front isnt connected properly and may be shorting, and the rear wire has been spliced, and the ground wire isnt connected.

the gear indicators not working, but this could be a seperate problem since it has been present since my winter tear-down.

#2: The tachometer cable keeps leaking , even though the seal/o-ring and cable, and drive gear are BRAND new. I did warp the metal fastener a bit with a vise-grip while tightening. Could it be the actual metal piece that the cable screws into at the engine block? I've taken it out twice, and retightened, it still leaks!

My valve cover is also leaking in the front, although I have a brand new silicone gasket (www.realgaskets.com). I believed I over-torqued it at first, because when I Took it off to put some silicone on, there was cracking running through the gasket most of the way round. not too bad, but on a brand new gasket, anythings bad.

Im gonna silicone it properly this weekend, and have the surface properly clean before applying, completely free of oil residue. This could also be the root of the leak ](*,)

    HERES HOPING!!!

    Hi Poot,

Charging woes: I'd suggest reading The Stator Papers on this site, then following the troubleshooting guide therein. That should track it down pretty quickly!

Tach drive: mine was leaking too. I put some permatex on the threads of that cable fitting and it seems to have stopped the leak.

    Good luck!

I would never use silicone on your bike ever. It can clog oil lines and screw everything up. When you sell your bike the new owner will have to spend way to much time cleaning up the mess. Just get the right gasket and do it that way. Regarding the tach cable there is also a seal inside the engine that can leak. Replacing the "outside stuff" sometimes doesn't cut it. There is a lot of information about this here on this site.

Electrical shorts will torch your RR. Spend the time to track them down and fix them properly, The wiring on bikes is really not too completed
1981 GS650G , all the bike you need
1980 GS1000G Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely

I started those diagnostic tests that are on the Stator Papers, and didnt get too far. It seems I have a bad connection in the positive leads of the R/R. I cleaned the connections thoroughly, and it still remains....?

I'll check those turn-signal wires, as well as the connections for my gear-position indicator (which also isn't working) and maybe that will help things?

As for the tachometer, I had also replaced the seal, and o-ring when I got the new unit, and gear, so the leak is especially *@%^$*@%^$*@%^$*@%^$in me off. When I had the metal part that the cable screws into , off the bike, i blew into it (with the drive-gear inside) and there was no air leak, so the seal is good. I think its leaking between that metal unit, and the engine block... even though its all the way tight....

I'll try getting the surfaces super clean+dry before I put the valve-cover gasket on this time, and hopefully it will stop the leak.

You have oil leeks in two locations where there should not be so I would start thinkin about crankcase preasure. Check that your breather tube is open and unkinked as this could cause undue preasure buildup inside the engine and force oil past seals and gaskets. I think that there is a mesh filter in the valve cover also, check that also perhaps. I guess a person could remove the oil add bung and blow in the breather tube. It should be totally free of back preasure.

Go to the bottom of the post for the question...,e

Breather is good. I also have all of the breather/cover wire mesh.

I noticed that when checking the connectors of the wires for the R/R , the plastic boots were melted/black in the area that touched the metal connectors. Is this a clue to the cause?

I haven't checked the physical condition of the stator yet, because I'm pretty sure i'd need to order the gasket for the cover...no?e

As for my Gear Position indicator, I went and checked all of the connections (as well as the blue neutral wire in the headlight bucket, and they seem to be good. I cleaned and used di-electric grease. The plastic piece under the carburetors ((is it even related to this?)) is tight, and the gear position indicator under the engine is fastened properly.

QUESTION: It goes for both problems. If I have to check for any broken wires, what is the best solution?

MORE IMPORTANT QUESTION: SHould I take it to a shop? I'm not really too familiar with anything electrical, and its also important for me to get this fixed within the next 2 weeks for a trip I've got planned.

              Any help would be appreciated.
