    Pilot Jets

Hey guys, i took apart my carburators on my 1982, GS650 today, well i tried as best as i could because the kid i bought it off had stripped 90% of all the screws holding the CV caps on. he also managed to strip the heads off of the Pilot Jets while they're still in the carb, and i was wondering if there is any way to get them out? i wanted to pull the carbs apart and clean them all and put new gaskets, O-rings, and seat and needles on but i cant get the CV caps off of 3 of the carbs and cant get any of the pilot jets out, is there any way to get the bolts and jets out? or am i pretty much screwed.

Yes,Just check all the jet,s make certain they have not been changed, and you can use your old set for spare's.

If you can get the pilots backed out even a few turns that should be enough to blast them out good with a spray type injector cleaner. The stripped screws could be replaced with self tapping screws slightly larger than they had.

i cant get the jets out at all, theres only about 1/4 of one half of the raised part that the flat head is susposed to fit into. therefore there is nothing for the screwdriver to grip.

They are probably exactly the same.

I've got a 1981 gs 650gx which I spent the winter working on. One of the first things whas the carbs ans as I ran into the sam situation as you with respect to the stripped CV cap screws. In general the philips type screws in these old bikes are a reciep for disaster. I think buying new carbs may not be the most cost effective methodologhy for fixing your problem. What I did with the CV screws was to get a set of "Grabbit" screw extractors for Canadain tire up here but Sears has the same thing under the craftsman banner and costs about 12 bucks(a lot cheaper that new carbs! ) I just but the thing in my cordless drill, folloed the instructions and presto! screws came out like butter. I then went to my local fastener place and repalced all the screw with stanless steal allen head bolts which cost about 3 bucks! With respect to your idle jets I think the same methodology will work to get them out but you will need a much smaller diameter of EZ out. The idea is to drill a small hole in the centre of the jet with a small diameter bit , just large enough for the EZ out to get purchase in the hole and then use the EZ out and it's reverse threads to turn out the jet. It sould be relatively easy ass there is already a small hole in the top of the pilot jet. The key is to go slow and BE CAREFUL especially when fooling around in the pilot jet hole.
But, with care I think it should work and it is certainly better than buying new carbs and you will be prepared for future fastener porblems armed with tools and confidence.

Sorry about my spelling, but as Theodore Rooseavelt once said "it's a dam poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word". And I don't know how to use spell check on these posts!

A pair of visegrips works wonders too!!!!!! IF you are going to drill out the fuel mix screws ?? DO NOT USE A REGULAR DRILL BIT USE A LEFT hand drill bit & easyout if needed

i had stripped pilot jets in my carbs too, here's how i got mine out:

i hammered a very hard and sharp flathead driver in them and got a grip on them that way. they came out (equip yerself with a handful of 4 letter words also for luck) they're made of relatively soft brass.

after you get them out, you need to clean the carbs very thoroughly, i had little brass shavings all over the place...

as far as the cv caps go: are the screws mashed, or is the thread screwed?
in one case, vise grip them out and replace with allen cap bolts, in the other jsut use a nut on the other side to hold them on after you put in a longer screw...
