Coils+Carb Question(s)

Hi All,

Still Trying to get my '82 GS550L on the road!
Question one:
Should there be 12 volts on the primary side of both coils,I am getting
10-11 volts on one,Zero volts showing on the other even when cranking!
However it starts and runs(badly) on all four cylinders, it won't rev and pops through the carbs
Question two:
What do those little black rubber plugs do in the carb float bowl? I've never seen them before. (the ones that plug the pilot jet)
what happens if you take them out?
I've re-built Mikuni CV carbs in my Yamaha and they don't have 'em

Those little black rubber plugs close off your pilot jet from the bowl.
There is a little hole in your main-jet passageway just after the main jet that leads to your pilot circuit.

That little passage forces fuel to come into the idle circuit by way of the main jet and then go into the pilot jet emulsion holes and get aerated by the airflow coming from the pilot-circuits' air-jet that you can find on the intake face of the carb.

If you take the little black plugs out the fuel will not mix with the air correctly at idle and your mixture will be either ultra rich or non-existant.


After almost 2 years with CV carb jetting I'm getting to know them rather intimately.

Those plugs are not used on VM carbs right?

Right only on the BS carbs
