    82 GS650E carbs problems - help

purchased this bike from a landlord, the prevous renter left it....replaced boots....PROBLEM: Carbs donot seem to take in any fuel...I can spray gas or starter fluid through the venturies and the bike will start...but will not continue...can the carbs be so clogged (old gas no doubt) that even the main jets wont work?? Took apart the fuel bowls and removed the main jets, cleaned, seemed ok and reassembled...same problem, any suggestions before I pay someone to professionally rebuild the carbs, cant think of anything else it could be... thanks in advance.. You are getting gas to the carbs, right? A. there's gas in the tank. b. the petcock runs feely. c. the vacum is woking on the petcock. d theres enough gas so that you don't need to turn the petcock to reserve.
    Ok that's enough about gas.

Did you try turning the fuel valve to prime to fill bowls. This takes longer
than you think. Fuel valve does not work until there is vac. Check for splits in vac. line.

Try taking a look at the carb cleanup series and do a complete tear down and thorough cleaning, replacing any o-rings that need replacing, and see what happens.

Check the holes in the carb bowls. The little brass straw goes into a hole in carb bowl. This is choke circuit. If these holes are blocked it can't get gas when choke is applied. the straw must also be clean and free. Choke must be on to blow cleaner through this straw. Remove rubber parts before doing this as cleaner may ruin these rubber parts.

dumb question, but did you put new gas in the tank? Old gas can be a problem.
