    600 katana in a '85 GS550E? Anybody tried it?

A friend of mine bought a '85 GS550E for cheap. When he bought it there was a really bad miss, which we assumed was spark or carb related. After fooling around with it for a while, it's becoming clear that there's a mechanical problem.

The bike is really fun to ride, even with the miss going on. I'm wondering about the possibility of fitting a GSX600 engine in there, because I have seen them go for cheap.

This 550 has the dodgy looking dual throat carbs, one of which is probably junk because of a damaged idle jet.

    Anybody tried it?

I know it's been done, I remeber a very short piece in a mag I read.
But it allso said "The frame was extensivly modified"
So yes it can be done.

      Thanks.

Extensive modification of the frame is something I'm trying to avoid.

I just went that route with my GS1000, and the memory is too fresh and painful to relive this soon.

A lot of time, alot of messing around, maybe just pick up another 550 motor.

The 600 motor is the same size externally as the 750 which makes putting it in a 550 frame a job.

The 650E ( chain drive ) was about the same size, if you could find one that would be easyer!

I've heard that oil cooled GSXR 750's 'll go right into the GS550 frames, I know GS750s won't because they're quite a bit longer at the bottom end and when you put a GSXR750 engine into a GS750 frame there's alot of room back to front so it follows that this would work. I've been planning to try it myself.

goes right in, no problems, you may even be able to use the stock mounts, gsx engines up to 750 and up to 2002 (maybe even later) are very small, the mount points are very similar

the pilot screws can be taken out with a screw extractor kit and a drill press... (I just did two of them on my own GS5550E carbs)

The pilot screw can then be replaced with the pilot screws out of the carbs that come on the old mid-late 80's GS500... We did a little fooling about and a little buying to figure that one out.

GSX750F Katana motor starting in 89 is the same as the GSXR.

                    Just tuned a little diffrent.

Might help in finding one that's not too hammerd
