Cheap pistons for GS 1000?

I tore the head off my bike today and am realizing where my ticking sound is coming from. It's piston slap and with only 38000km. Any ideas where I could get a set of affordable pistons for my 78 GS1000. What kind of mileage would be considered worthy of looking into for a parts bike? The Wiseco pistons brand new are $800.00 cdn. plus I would have to overbore (another $250.00) and my cylinders are fine.

I found new OEM pistons for an 850 that ran $40 each with an additional $40 for a ring set. Try some of the parts links on this site before you shell out that kind of money. I wouldn't consider putting already worn pistons/rings in a bike - the rebuild labor effort is just too much.

the wiseco price includes the head gasket as well, but I doubt that lil bit helps with the price at all. might be worth it to raise compression a point if thats an option for you.

otherwise OEM pistons and rings shouldnt be much worse for yours than mine, my dealer charged me 23 bucks apiece for ringsets, and I think the pistons were 40 bucks US ea. but cant remember, they mightve been less. I bought a vesrah full engine gasket set for 80 bucks from my local repair shop, and as long as thats all your problems it shouldnt be so bad.

Check out http://www.pro-flo.com/pro-flo_wisec..._bore_kits.htm they have the wiseco 1085 or 1100cc kits for $359.95. If you don't mind going bigbore this is the best price I have found.

A wiseco kit is a good investment if your bike has covered a high mileage and has worn bores. At 38,000km you won't have worn bores or pistons. You'll only need rings and the bores honed if even that.

10 years ago I went with the Wiesco kit because it was cheaper than OEM oversize parts.

The 1085 kit is a good deal, more torque!

I don't think the CND exchange rate is 50%!
