GS450 Working one minute - dead the next
I have a 83 GS 450L. The other day it was working fine. I go to start it today and it is totally dead. Nothing, no lights, no instrument pannel. Nothing. The battery is brand new, 2 weeks old. I checked it. It has a charge. I checked the fuse on the battery wire and it is fine. I took the key mechanism apart and it seems to be working fine. Anybody have any ideas? Is there another fuse I am missing somewhere? Thanks for your help.Tags: None

what is the voltage reading at the battery? a full battery will have atleast 12.6volts.
with a meter conected to the battery, turn on the ignition switch and see if the voltage level holds, if it does you will need to trace the main power wire checking for bad connections.

I had a very similar problem.
It turned out the main fuse was so old that apparently the glue holding it together had deteriorated. When I removed the fuse, it fell apart in my hands (the glass tube separated from one of the metal ends). I replaced the fuse and my bike works again! :-)
Good luck.

Re: GS450 Working one minute - dead the next
I can only think of two things on the bike that would shut off all electrical power. Even though the main fuse looks fine, I would replace it. and check to see that there was power coming into it and going through it. Then I would check the positive feed to the ignition switch to make sure there was power going into the switch. Next, I would check the output leads on the ignition switch to be sure power flowed through it. I suspect either the main fuse, the main fuse holder, or the ignition switch is at fault.

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion. H.D.T.
