    GS compatability issues

Ok so my 750 needs a total engine overhaul and I was going to do some healthy mods anyway. Then a freind asks if it is for sale for parts, hell no!
then I see this, in my hometown mind you

now If I am right the 1000 is essentially a bored out 750 engine and save the forks and a few minor parts they re pretty much the same bike. They are both pre tscc bikes so they should be very similar, please tell me if I am wrong.

    so...

    If I were to take:

    the frame

    the tank & rear

    and the wheels.

then custom mod and powdercoat the 750 frame, re wire it (i know a few electricians luckily!) then strip the 1k over onto my moded frame and add the spoke wheels (cafe racers need spokes) would everything fit. ?

I know it is a pita but i was going to do a total rebuild anyways. this custom rebuild lets me ride longer and gives me 250 more ccs.

    swap

if your going to spend the money on a well used bike then restore the big bore, but you are still starting with something that needs work, the purchase money could get you a good start on your 750 rebuild and then you know what you have, yes the 1k is faster stock but you can get real close to its power out put with the right mods, on your 750, you can do the swap but, you can rebuild what you have, and know its solid, and when your done put some 550 emblems on it and surprise a few guys, the picture of the engine looks like there is fin damage to the head

I persnally would restore the GS1000 But to anser your question yes the engine will fit & alot of other parts too, you will need to modify the rear motor mount

I own a 750 & 2 1000s. Looking at the 1000e in the ad, I noticed what looks to be a leaky head gasket. You should go check this bike out in person as the photos are AWFUL!!!! If you make a 7/11, all you'll really need is the motor.
The 750 seat, tank, tailpeice etc. are very different from the 1000 parts.
Unless you have electrical problems, why would you change the wiring? There is no benefit in switching to a 1000 harness.
Lastly the price is too high for a parts bike. $600+ would go a long way toward an engine rebuild.

After thinking it over I have to agree with you and B.B. I was very tempted when I saw it was in my hometown but after I emailed the seller he told me that the bike was being stored by a freind of his and he din't want to turn her house into a used bike show room. that uis understandable but I simply cannot throw that kind of money around on smothing that I havent seen in person.

still it is nice to know thatif the right 1k engine comes along I can fit it into the (by then) Cafe 750

                First things first:

1.) What year is the bike? Gs models made after 1980 have an updated engine style

2.) What do you plan on modding, I.E. performance, appearance, comfort, luggage space.?

3.) what direction do you want to go? are you gunning for an agressive streetfighter/Cafe racer or are you looking to make a laid back cruiser/chopper, or a tourer etc...

4.) What if any are your mechanical abilities? Do you have friends or relatives that could help you?

5.) How much do you want to spend? this ties in with the above questions as obviously it is far less expensive to do things yourself. also many shops have trouble with older bikes and some will not work on them.

hope that gives you somthing to go on

1981 GSX750 AKA GS750E The bike is the brother to the 81 Katana with slightly different configeration.
Well Im torn. I'm a big guy so hunching over the tank isn't how I like to ride, but the low tank of this bike will acomidate. I like the look of the Street Fighters and Cafe Racers I Love the power they represent. I have always ridden cruser or touring style bikes my other bike is a 1983 gs450t.
Well I want the power and a lot of the look of a fighter I think this is what I will do.

                  ENGINE:
                  I have a 4/1 mac exhaust
                  I want
Bigger carbs or Fuel Injection with K&N style PODs
                  Dyna ignition or similar
                  Port & Polish
Newer balanced & welded sport cams
And I guess a welded clutch basket I'm not sure why but this seems to be a mod people do I would asume for dependibility

                  BODY:
Solo sadle seat sprung with chopped frame rear of the shock mounts
Newer front end for a new sport wheel & brakes (not sure if this is needed)
Newer swing arm (same as above)
A MUST new chrome gauges and duel crome round fighter style head lights
New micro signals LED tail lights
                  Chrome fenders are another MUST
Braded everything brake lines, throttle cable, clutch cable.
Not sure about the bars High or Low?? maybe just get them chromed

I guess I want a Cafe Fighter a new old mix
Now how to do this. Well I have no money, and I have two people I might beable to call on for alittle help, but in the end it's all me. I think most of this I can work my way through.

If you have any sugestions I have started my own post under
1981 GSX750E I need a MOD parts list any ideas??
I dont want to Hijack this post
                  Thanks for the help

Sagent, I'm bringing this post back to life again buddy, even though it is to hijack it again.

Rek - I'm just outside of Dawsonville and I would like to talk to you about the 2 GS 1000's if you still have them. What's the low down?
Do either have the possibilty of running again? Are there enough parts to make a complete running bike if not?

sorry it took so long to get back, i didn;t see it and it didn't come up on my messages. i traded the two main 1ks for a nice pretty kz1100 spectre . i have one partial parts bike, a G wo the head. i will probably strip it and throw away the rest. i have a 750 frame that you can have if you want.

the 1000 is a differant engine, (the 1000 is actualy 8 lbs lighter) the motormounts are slightly differant but it is not hard to "adjust" them so the 1000 engine will fit, and it has been done.
