    ATTN: carb experts

When fully warmed up, my '83 GS850 accelerates much harder if I apply some choke. Is this an indication that the bike is running too lean and may be helped out by raising the needles or upping the MJ size?

    Thanks in adance,
    Ace.

Yes, raising the needle and going up in main jet size will richen the mixture, don't forget your pilot circut. How long has the bike been acting this way? This also could be an indication your carbs need cleaning. Can you give us a description of your bike's carb's? I guess you at least have a jet kit if you can raise your needles.

As far as I know, the carbs are box stock and have not been altered. They are the standard Mikuni CV carbs used on 850s that year.

The bike has done this as long as I've had, about 5 months.

Woha guys, that is a sure indication that you may have an intake leak.

Check the intake manifolds. Make sure you remove them becasue they can look fine from the outside, but still be cracked and leaking on the inside flange. The water/WD40/carb cleaner test has failed for me in the past, so I no longer count on anything less than a visual inspection of the boots. Squeeze them to an oval, you may see cracks.

Not saying it's not a jetting issue, but check this before anything.

Yep, Jethro is correct. Since your bike is apparently stock I would say you have a problem rather than a jetting issue.

              Thanks Jethro and Nick.

I'll look at the intakes and see if they are cracked. I would prefer to leave everything stock, so I hope it is a leak.
