Engine Painting - What Temperature Rating To Choose.

Ok..so I've done the correct thing and searched this forum and searched. I understand that the oil temp gets between 200 and 230- degrees.

I've managed to completely disassemble this motor down to the cases. Ive had them blasted and now Im ready for painting.

It seems that there are a couple temperature ratings of paint to choose from.

How hot does the cases and fins actually get so that I may make an informed decision?

I tear mine down and powder coat em' ......

For the engine cases, any heat paint will be of high enough temperature range. The cases dont get all that hot. For the cooling fins, I use the 1200 deg heat paint and have had not problems with it. For black exhaust pipes, nothing I have found will look good for more than two weeks, including the new ceramic paints. The pipes burn anything off pretty quickly. My preference for engine cases, tranny, etc and valve cover is Dupont Imron, but its expensive and requires a spray gun to apply. It holds up exceptionally well on the cases, but cant be used on fins as its not a high temp paint and only good for about 300 deg.

I actually used regular spray paint on the starter cover and it did not burn off. I guess the starter cover does not get that hot. I did the cases with an Engine Paint that was clear, sold inPep Boys and Auto Zone.

Thanks guys...yeah i figured that the cases didnt get too hot. It was actually the cooling fins that I worried about.

I have a spray gun sitting around here somewhere...so off to paint we go

I have heard several people that were very happy with the pipe coatings and the piston stuff, but I have no firsthand experience with it. Last I heard, they can't ship to Canada (dangerous goods rules) and they don't have a Canadian distributor, so I am out of luck...

Mark, If you are really set on using their services, ship the parts to me. I will forward to them, then get them back to you. Customs will only have to know that they are used motorcycle parts. :roll:
