    Newbie Exhaust Question!

    (I have a 2-cylinder bike. )

    The question is:

Why is there a connection between the two exhaust headers underneath the bike? It seems like it is an area that is destined for premature failure due to rust, impact damage, etc.

In fact, the rest of my exhaust system is A-OK, but on both my parts bike and my good bike, this area where the two pipes connect is very corroded and damaged.

This is a balance pipe, the theory is that each cylinder get's to flow through both mufflers, standard sort of thing for twins at the time.
It can be removed and blanked off, but performance wise it's better to leave it on.
You may be able to make up a new one, or get a muffler shop to do it for you!

        BigMatty,

Hey neighbor, I grew up in Binghamton... West Side y'all! (Flashes gang sign)

Oh wait...there prolly IS some white bread West Side gang now...times do change...

Anyway I think there is a Cole Muffler on Main St, they do great work cheap. Exhaust is about the only thing I don't do myself and Cole is the place I went when I lived there. I'm sure you could get something made up for pretty cheap.

BTW I saw a Suzuki twin out at Gary's U-pull-it earlier in the summer. I don't know exactly what it was but it might be worth a look for you.

          Mac:

I actually live in Oxford and work in Norwich and Hamilton.

I only put Binghamton because it is the nearest city.

I deal with vitreous humor every day. (I am an optometrist.)

I grew up in Windsor. I was just back in Binghamton visiting the family about a month ago.
