    High RPM in 5th (850L)

The RPMs in 5th seem a little high on my 850 for what I'm used to. In 5th while riding around 60mph, the RPMs are around 4000. I would expect it to be closer to 3000. I should add that this bike does not come equipped with 6th, but I think that is an option on other 850 models.

Is this typical for the GS850L (1980)?

    Thanks.

That is the tipical RPM . Their was never an 850 offered with a 6 speed

Same Here, 1980 850G. I think these bikes were tuned/geared more for Lugging than speed.
      sigpic2002 KLR650 Ugly but fun!
2001 KLR650 too pretty to get dirty

Life is a balancing act, enjoy every day, "later" will come sooner than you think. Denying yourself joy now betting you will have health and money to enjoy life later is a bad bet.

That's good to know. It does make interstate riding feel like it's wound out a little. But it's far from redline, and it also gives me more reason to take the (twisty) back roads.

        Thanks.

IM AT ABOUT 4,000 RPM ON MY 1979 750 AT 50 MPH AND ABOUT 8,000 AT 100 MPH. AND CRUISING SPEED IS ABOUT 75. SO ITS AROUND 6,000. I AM GOING TO CHANGE MY FINAL DRIVE RATIO SO IT DOESN'T SCREAM DOING THE SPEED LIMIT.

83' 850G and 60-70MPH seems about right for mine

Well I can't criticise for using caps lock if you're typing with one
              hand at 100MPH...
