    Pre VM Carbs

    Hi all,

May be picking up a parts bike, and am wondering if it is much harder to clean out the older style GS carbs, and if the o-rings (robert barr) are compatible?

    any help/tips would be great.

It's pretty sraightforward to clean the older ('77-'79) VM carbs - just keep track of the parts. Robert sells a set of o-rings specifically for them.

I used the carb cleaning article from the GSR garage as a general guide, did a pile of searches on the GSR forum for other tips on cleaning, initial settings, and final tuning, and had several manuals. It was helpfull to do a big blowup of the diagram in the manual that I hung above the bench as a reference.

My personal belief is the Vm's are easier to clean & take care of compared to the BS series

VM carbs are easier to work on than CV's. Barr's o-rings are recommended.
As always, a good manual, factory is best, is needed to do a complete job.
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

well. i wasnt planning on changing any of the settings (float height, air screw), but just cleaning them out and replacing o-rings.
