Hello, I would like start a project GS bike. I currently own an entire swingarm from a GS750EX. This is the monoshock version. I would like to find a GS1000 engine and suitable frame. Can someone tell me what I can interchange between engines/frames and what years will work with others.

Regarding the swingarm, the GS750EX had twin shocks, is this an aftermarket swingarm? As far as interchangability, all kinds of parts interchange. Some are direct swaps, others take a bit of engineering and fabrication. If you could be a little more specific about the particular parts you want to swap I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice here.

I'm sorry it is a swingarm from a GS750ES single shock with damping adjustment dial. I would like find a motor and frame and build a GS from the ground up.

So you have the shock and linkage too? Don't know for certain but it's fairly common for swingarms to interchange between several models, however if you're using that shock and linkage I doubt that it will directly bolt on to anything except an '83 thru. '85 GS750/700 frame. Of course it can be made to fit most any bike with a little fabrication and welding. As far as engine, suspension and wheel compatability go, you might search back through some of the threads in the technical forum. I know in the past few weeks people have talked about putting GSXR wheels and forks on GS models and also stuffing larger engines in various bikes including the '83 750. I'm currently putting Katana forks and GSXR brakes on my '83 XN85 Turbo. The stock wheels and suspension is similar to the 750 so if you go with that frame I may be able to give you some advice there.

Again, be specific, maybe start a new thread titled "Will '83 GS750E swingarm fit GS1000" and include the pivot bolt diameter and width at frame.

I have to say that I have never met someone had just a swingarm who wanted to build a bike based on the swingarm! Most folks have at least an engine or a frame!

I was suprised too reading this. Still, when even a swing-arm has enough charisma that you want to ow the whole bike ... Good luck with the project. I hope we all can be of some help here. First step would be sourcing some more parts though. Why do you want to go for the GS1000?

Thanks for all of your input. As to the idea of starting with just the swingarm, I must say I bought it for another project bike and it would not fit. I paid very little for it and have always liked the GS models so I decided to build one from ground up. I figured I would either tear down an assembled bike or search for the pieces needed to build a complete one. Anyone know of a good source for GS frames?

Don't know if it's a GOOD source but I was over at Skip's motorcycle junk yard near Lunken airport the other day and they had some early '80's Suzuki's. You might want to stop by for a look. Be sure to take some mosquito repellant and if anyone asked, don't give them your address. There's also a big M.C. salvage yard in Indianapolis called Cycle Recycle, they have a bunch of '80's stuff and it's all indoors.

I know what you mean about the mosquitos! They will eat you alive. I have been to Skips a few times and I must say it is always an adventure. To make a long story short the yard could be run a lot better than it is! Thanks for the info, I will give them both a try.
