Carb back on bike, start-up procedure? '81 GS450L

Ok, I have all the parts I think I need so I'll be putting the carbs back on tonight.

My question is, once I get the carbs back on, what position should I have the petcock on? It has a PRIme position, and I understand this allows fuel to flow with the engine off--should I put it on PRI for a few seconds/minutes/hours/days before trying to start it?

Should I just put the petcock on ON?

After doing work on the carbs I throw it into prime and give a 15 second count letting gas fill the float bowls.... Otherwise you'll have to crank it over for a bit and let the vacuum system fill the float bowls... After the 15 count turn it back to "on" and crank er over.

make sure you have all throttle/choke cables connected properly before you try to turn the engine over... Nothing like cranking the engine over lettign it idle for 5 minutes and then grabbing the throttle and getting ntohing.

Or it idling at 4K right off the bat... My first time with carb work I didn't 'snap' the throttle cable into the guide at the carbs so it drove me nuts everytime I'd start it it would idle like a mother then I'd have to kill it (sometimes I'd get a nice POP backfire). I thought I'd fubar'ed the carbs.

second on the test of cabling. I once put my carbs back on and wasn't careful about where the clamp screw on the rubber boot pointed, it all worked nicely until you tried to let go of the throttle and realized it was stuck open!! a piece on the throttle bar was caught on the clamp!
