    Fairing cracking on GK

Greetings to all!! I was a forum member a couple of years ago and have been away on the road. I have an '82 GS1100GK. There are some cracks on the lowers and the right side mount at the frame has cracked all the way through. Has anyone come up against this problem and how to fix it since the bodywork is ABS plastic? There is a kit but it's $75 for ABS, but I thought I'd ask the experts first. Maybe Big Nick or others have thoughts on this. Thanks in advance folks, good to be back... Jerry

Earl is a Fiberglass man, hopefully he'll explain it in detail.

Welcome Back. Nick is in hiding. I hear, thru the grapevine, that he is still with us. 8)

Do a search on "Windjammer". There's a few good posts with lots of ideas on fixing ABS cracks.

I used "Oatey" brand "Extra Special Black ABS Cement" from the local hardware store on the cracks in my lowers. For areas under more stress (like cracks around the trunk mounting studs) I embedded fiberglass mesh into the ABS cement. That was over 3 years ago and no new cracks...

Dunno what Connie's fairing is made of but I used 'Plumber's GOOP' to fix it. Also repaired the windshield on the 550. It's a silicone rtv compound that is made to work with plastic pipe. You might have seen Shoe, Sportsman, or other GOOP formulations. I like this stuff because it remains somewhat flexible so it doesn't recrack. Got mine at an Ace Hardware store.
