    83 CDI box

    anyone know if you can interchange the cdi box`s?? IE:: 82 83 750 to 1100???

    Very good question? I have a 1983 GS850G with a bad CDI box, part number is 32900-49420 and was hoping that I could find a CDI box from anothe bike that would work.

    IE: would a CDI box from the years 1981, 82, 83 or 84 that came from a 750, 850 or an 1100 fit?

    I am very poor at this kind of work and was wondering what was meant by replace with points and not using the CDI box, could someone explain what would come off of the bike? what I would need and how to hook up. Need some idea of what I am going to look for and talk about

      I don't recommend you replace the electronic ignition system on your 83 GS850 with points. The only model 850 that came with points was the original, in 1979. Parts may be difficult to find, plus you would lose the considerable advantage of electronic ignition -- maintenance-free operation.

      I don't have the exact part you need. Instead, I do have an ignition black box off a 1982 GS850G. The part number is 32900-49410. The part you need is 49420. I suspect, from my experience with parts on these GS bikes, that the 49410 part I do have will fit your 850 perfectly, and will work just fine.

      By the way, in 17 years of riding GS shafties, I've never had any problems with ignition. They're quite reliable, for the most part.

          Want to thank you for the CDI box you sent me and all your help. Just recived the box last week and got it wired and working today. Runs Great!

          You where right when you came to the conclusion that the CDI box part number 49420 you had was the same thing as my 49410, except for the connections.

          I listened to your idea of how GS owners have to learn to adapt things once in awhile and how the eight wires would have to be spliced and connected to the correct leads from my motorcycle. It took sometime to do, but the the bike now works like new, almost new.

            From reading around the GSR....I thought that none of our GS bikes technically have a Capacitive Discharge Ignition or CDI........you guys may have an electronic ignition....but it can't technically be labled as a CDI or am I crazy?

              I'm quite happy to have been able to sell you that electronic ignition box, and that you adapted it to your needs, Chris. Thanks for the kind words!

              That ignition box was working just fine when I parted off the second 1982 GS850 I had, so I was 99.99% sure it would still work, and obviously it does.

              Now, enjoy your 850. That's a great bike you got there!

                Only the two stoke GSs use a CDI and surface gap plugs. CDI refers to the Capacitive Discharge Ignition system that was used on two stroke engines.

                It was one of the first electronic ignition approached and not really that simular to the later electronic ignitions. The name just tended to get carried over to anything that was not a conventional (at the time) points and condenser ignition system. It was even used on high-energy systems that used a points trigger that was amplified electronically.

                  If you ever worked on old magneto driven two stroke engines that barely produced enough voltage to get a spark you knew what a big deal CDI was.

                  With the old systems the ignition system was usually so marginal that anything less than a new perfect plug might not fire at all. If you ran a little too rich the plug would foul so your carburetion needed to be adjusted for altitude and temperature. When you went to a Prairie Dog Scrambles, TT Scrambles, or other dirt bike event you always made sure you carried jets and at least 20 pounds of spark plugs spark plugs.
