    Fuel starvation?? or ##@%%^@@ something!

hi, i have put about 1500 miles on GSUgly in the past month as i tweek it up to the point that i have to consider cosmetics (paint).
    i was almost there....
on wednesday i went to the church as usual filled up on the way and left about 9 pm. i was in a hurry as my wife had called and said she had car trouble. i lit out fast and it was just not ON. i seemed to be way down on power in the main,, but idled fine. i got it home and thought the filter might be stopped up so i removed it and ran a new fuel line. did seem to work as i tried it out. drove it to work(80 miles) on thurs and it was it's old self (fun). i went to my dads on thurs night after supper and the gremlin was back. smooth on the idle and under very light accel, any attempt to goose it resulting in bucking popping and jumping. tried pri and no help.
i thouhgt i got some bad gas, so i put a bottle of sea foam in and filled up again.
went to work on fri with the first 20 miles working good and then going to the sputtering on any setting much above idle.
still does it now. i remove the carbs squirted out the passages and verified that the petcock was flowing and flowing well in prime. i hooked up the gas tank with the bowls removed and verified that all four carbs are getting fuel. checked that both sets of points are opening, getting frustrated.
i will let it lie as i await your response. color me stumped.

Perhaps the bike took offence at being called ugly and is protesting. Now if you had called it GSPretty..............It might purr like a kitten.

Is the inside of the tank clean? Could be minute particles of rust causing problems. What were the float bowls like when you stripped the carbs?

You say it was flowing well on prime! How is the flow on main, you could have a vacumn problem with the petcock.

it will be pretty one day.
the carbs looked good. i know i got them when they were not good and dipped them, cleaned and scrubbed them.
the problem occurs on all settings of the petcock including prime. i thought the same and turned it to prime and reserve after first having trouble.
i have a clear glass Mr. Gasket filter and it is allways full.
        i am stumped!!

You could try the breather in the gas cap, long shot but it's happend to guy's here before.
Have a look at the spark as well, should be getting a nice fat blue spark.

FIRST through the filter away it will restrict fuel flow. If it still does it after
removal & even on prime I wound sugest CLean the points, replace the condensers, find a new/used set of coils from a later Bandit, GSXR up to 95?, RF900 & go from their.

                thanks all,

the first fill up that was mentioned was the apparent culprit. i pulled out the petcock yesterday and the tank was full of black junk that reminded me of the stuff in an engine that accumulates if you don.t change the oil. it was a solid particle that went away as you rub it. the station had been out of gas for a week or so right before i got the gas :x some has apparently gotten in the carbs while i was running w/o a filter. the filter i have is a MR Gasket w/ replaceable elements that is made for hipo cars, ithink it should not restrict my fuel flow?? i have to go sit w/ my dad for a few days(heart surgery) so in that time i will dissasemble the carbs completely and clean every passage, and go from there.
i tell you what, between this and the kz i can pull some carbs in a hurry!
                i'll keep ya posted!

you rock! it was a twofold problem, 1 junk from the tank that was lodged in the #3 needle jet, then it would run good until warm, the crappy after. replaced the #2and 3 condenser as the plugs were black on those as 1&4 were tan
                  runs like a raped ape!
                  whatever that is
                  whew!! :? :?
thanks for all the help, can now strip the VMs in just a couple of minutes.

Regardless, your bike already has 5 inline fuel filters- you don't need another. They have casued me nothing but agony in tuning my bike. Get rid of it immediately.
