Yet another carb question Prepareing for the dip

Bear with me, this is kinda a test. I hope the photo works.
The caps on the outer carbs, can they be removed and how to do it?

Mine were already removed when I bought it. I've always wondered if I should plug 'em up or not? She runs real good, but does take a long time to warm up and my gas mileage kinda sucks. I only get about 38mpg. I have a heavy (fairing, saddlebags, trunk) '81 850G, so perhaps that is why my mileage isn't as high as I'd like it to be. Also, could removing those plugs cause bad gas mileage?

I dipped mine with that cap in place. I expect it is to remove the butterfly pivot, but all of that (I believe) is metal and should be ok to dip?

btw, don't leave them in the dip all night, I removed what i think was supposed to be a seal on each of the brass plugs around the body... so far no effect that I've seen, but I really haven't had it running enought to tell for sure :roll:

g'luck, and go find the carb cleanup on the cover page, it illustrates every step of disassembling the carbs for dip!

There should be no need to remove that part. The cleaning process will be just fine with it present.

I have the understanding from another post that there is a seal under the cap. Over the years I've done carbs I have never removed it. That picture is of a recently done job, (see newbee with a new begining ). That machine runs well, when it runs.. :x I am getting ready to some work on my own machine, including the carbs but I don't think I'll need to dip them. Mine is running well.
Snowbeard, That "seal" on the brass plugs is like a sealent used when they were installed. In a perfect world they wouldn't need it. Over time thermal issues may cause leaks. I've used clear nail polish to "reseal" them.
