    removing the wheels

any tips or gotchas as far as removing the wheels?

Looks like a big honking hex nut with cotter pin and a small
nut which is loosened to unclamp the rod that goes through
    the wheel

On the rear do I move the wheel forward to remove the chain
first? Before removing the rod? I'm guessing yea.

I , for one, use a torque wrench and spec sheet from the Clymers manual to tighten bolts back there. I know someone that failed to do that and was really surprised at what happened. There are proper torques for all the bolts on the rear, smart mechanics tighten them accordingly.
