i can't help you engine wise, as my 81 gs1100e now has a 1150 motor...
the '81 1100cc engine has 16 valves and i believe it makes 100 hp
the 1000 might be a 8 valve job and make less power.
the one thing i do know about the 81 gs1100e is this though:
it has the BEST STOCK MOTORCYCLE SEAT IVE EVER SAT ON.
it's like super all-day comfy, oh yeah... buy one, your butt will thank you.

I find my 81 is pretty comfortable for the first 5 hours. After that it's pure hel!. The 83 is hands down the most comfortable saddle I have ever encountered. I can ride all day Sat and Sun and still be fairly comfortable.Currently bikeless

I ride, therefore I am.... constantly buying new tires.
