    What motor is this?

Well, my project '83 GS750ED is coming along well enough. I have one nagging question though. What engine is this in my bike? I've got the shop manual now, but it has just raised more questions. The title says '83 GS750ED, the frame says the same. The engine is all black with no lettering on the cylinder head cover, which is also finned. The manual shows the engine has having polished cylinder heads and crankcase covers, but mine are all black. The manual also shows the cylinder head cover as have "TSCC" written on it and mine just doesn't have it. I started really checking the engine over well looking for a serial number or some sort of ID. Right there on the side of the engine is cast in"599cm3." There is my answer, it's a 600cc engine! On the bottom it also says "2SZZ-697." So, where did this motor come from? What kind of implications does this have for the continued renovation of the bike?

I thought the oil cooler didn't look quite right either, the bracket it was attached to have a piece of angle iron across it as a spacer or somthing, and the oil cooler lines were routed strangly. Did this motor originally have an oil cooler was the one from the removed 750 motor retained? It is connected to two holes on the front of the oil pan. Was this pan moved over from the 750 in order to hook up the cooler? If the cooler wasn't original to the engine then do I need to install this one?

This may sound silly, but what size spark plug socket do I need to get the plugs out?

One more odd question, how possible is it to drop the engine from a GS1100G into this bike? I don't really have a reason other than I know where I can get the motor cheap, and I've always had a hankering for a shaftie.

    Thanks everyone,

    David

Sounds like it could be a Katana 600 motor. If it is I would think about keeping it and spending the money of a few go fast parts. It's based on the GSX-R600 motor which you should be able to find plenty of parts for. Here is a link to a website. Let it load and you'll see a picture of a Kat with the fairing removed. You may be able to ID your motor from it.

I agree with Billy, sounds like a gsxr600 engine or a derivative there of.
the big tip off would be the size of the oil cooler, a oil cooler for a 83 GS engine would be around 8" wide by about 3"(inches) tall by about a inch thick.
If the oil cooler on the engine you have is alot bigger, than it is a later model GSXR engine (more power than the stock one had!!)

the GS engine is air cooled only, some later models added a oil cooler to help keep oil temps down, wich also helped scool the engine some.
the GSXR engine replaced the GS engine and used both air and oil for cooling, requiring a large oil cooler.

A previouse bike of the month on the GS resources home page was a late model GS that had a gsxr engine put in it, the picture should be in the gallery, it was a 83 or84.

Wow, so I've got a pretty neat little engine in there! I checked the oil cooler, it is 16" by about 5.5" by 1", much bigger than the stock one you mentioned. I checked out that web site and it looks like I've got some research to do on this engine. Hey I've got a 6-speed cool!
I trust that the stator problems that I've been dreading arn't an issue anymore?
This explains why my Ignitor unit says "Kat 600" on it.

Forget that 1100G motor. You can bore and resleeve that 600 engine out to at least 916cc and make over 120 hp.
