    Are carb bodies/internals interchangable?

I have two sets of carbs, one of which I know has serious problems, and the other one was probably working ok, but hasen't seen any usage in a very long period of time, and has parts that are either chemically bonded together making them impossible to separate, or in the case of one carb the inside of the bowl is totally coroded so the jets won't function at all....

Is it ok to swap parts between my two sets of carbs, and just set the pilor air screw etc to factory specs?

What would you do in this situation?

    TIA

If the carb banks/jets are the same sizes, you can swap. If you swap the actual carb bodies, you have to swap 1 for 1 , 2 for 2, etc. You can't swap position 1 for 2 or any other combination.
Whatever you do, be sure the carbs are cleaned with carb spray, etc, and blown out with compressed air. Be VERY careful to do a good cleaning. Keep each carb jets with that carb. I suggest a new VM o-ring kit (cheap) from Robert Barr, a member here. Adjust floats too while you have things apart. Bench synch the carbs as per a search here and then I suggest a vacuum tool synch.
Pilot fuel screw settings may have to be re-adjusted after re-assembly. You may try to record the settings you have and re-set and test. If poor idle/low speed performance, adjust accordingly. Adjust side air screws using the highest rpm method.
PS: check out the new VM carb section. Read it thoroughly before taking stuff apart.
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

Thanks for the info. The VM carb guide is my bible...

I guess I will have to swap my old #2 carb in, even though I know it is probably messed up. Maybe a good cleaning and turning the screws back to a normal position will help it :?

These carbs are beyond salvation. If anyone knows where to get something new, or something used that's well tuned at a reasonable price please post... last guy wanted $300

Why are they beyond salvation? What's wrong with each set? Detailed info please.

                Copied from thread in general:
Sorry Keith, I've been pretty swamped with school and other stuff.. I have some pics I will get up for you later, but the set that came on the bike I bought has been totally adjusted out of specs, and it was running like that for a while but it's just too late now...

It also had a messed up petcock that was letting gas into the oil through one, possibly more cylinders, through the carbs that were staying open. When I say it was adjusted out of specs I mean that when the pilot air screws are bottomed out I can count about 6 full threads down... I think they have been redrilled or something, I don't know what's wrong with it but they don't work. All of this I heard from the previous owner by the way. I just know that my bike is running crazy rich (when it's running at all, it normally just sits because it won't start or stay running) and the fuel is metered by the carbs so I figured I'd change em.

The second set was purchased through some estate sale on ebay which I should have taken as the bas sign it was, because after recieving them it became pretty obvious that it had been over 10 years since they have seen any action. Many of the screws were chemically bonded to the pieces they held in and had to be sprayed or soaked before they would very reluctantly be loosened. The pilot air screws on carbs 3, and 4 simply wouldn't come out by any technique short of drilling (didn't do it...I just left em(gave up)) and carb two is completely eaten up on the inside of the bowl by corossion. The lil posts that the jets screw into are just gone...it's a horrible sight. I took some badly focused pics that I will post later. The insides of the other carbs looks similar although not as bad, but soaking them overnight in carb spray does nothing.

Hence, I am trying to find a set I know was working well recently. I am either going to get one from a forum member who PM'ed me yesterday...still haven't heard back or from eBay...
