    Pods and stock pipe

Anyone ever gotten thier bike tuned well with K&N pods and the stock 4-2 pipes? Or is it just impossible? I don't think I'm gonna keep the pods anyway, but I'm putting on the stock exhaust and was just curious.

I HAVE A 79 GS750L AND I PUT ON UNI POD FILTERS AND KEPT THE STOCK EXHAUST. I WENT FROM A 102.5 STOCK MAIN JET TO A 115 AND RAISED THE NEEDLE TO POSITION 4. AND IT RUNS JUST ABOUT PERFECT.

Hmmm? Wonder where you got that jetting info? And on the first try! 8)
      Where's my atta-boy?
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

You've pretty much got a running atta-boy with all the carb help you give.

Think CV carbs will be harder to get running well with pods and stock pipe?

hey jethro: i dont know how useful this is to you, but my bike in the avatar (the 1100 with the 1150 engine) was running like a schweinerei, it had the stock pipes and k&n pods. it never ran other than super rich until i swapped the pipes.
its almost ok now. but the weird thing is i put those pipes on my 750 and now it won't run...

my friend runs pods on his stock 1100 and its fine. hes using the same carbs as me (slingshots), he has stock 4:2 pipes and the bike is just fine.
(i suspect my pipes are clogged)

im sorry i cant provide info about stock carbs other than the following:
my 750 had pods before (4 pods on stock 750 carbs) and it ran super strong up to expressway speeds where it would lose a lot of power (when it still had the stock 1100 exhaust). putting the stock airbox back on made it run fine at all speeds. but i didnt know how to jet carbs back then.

CV carbs are harder to re-jet than VM's.
In regards to how difficult re-jetting can be, changing the intake has the greatest effect on mixture, it doesn't really matter if the exhaust is stock or not. Changing just the intake to pods will still require richening all three jetting circuits. A freer flowing exhaust will just mean you'll have to run even richer jetting.
This will result in basically the same amount of trial and error. All motors have their own quirks when modified and it doesn't take much to screw up the jetting. The one added problem when just changing the intake is that no stage of jet kit meets your needs. Stage 1/2 isn't designed for pods, stage 3 or even 7 isn't designed for stock exhaust. So you're really left with trying to buy separate main jets/pilot jets/air jets and you still have a jet needle problem if your needles aren't adjustable.
I personally wouldn't bother with changing the intake only. The power benefit is compromised. The intake is breathing better, which means more power, but the exhaust is restricting the full potential.

Well, I wouldn't change just the intake but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.
We all do something if we think it's worth it. If you re-jet correctly, you'll pick up some power but you'll lose some lower end/mid-range torque...probably. You'll be able to service the carbs easier without the airbox but if you rebuild a set of carbs correctly and have a clean gas tank, how many times do you have to service the carbs? Carbs are good for years unless you let them sit with fuel in them or let them dry out and kill the rubber parts.
The thing is that you'll have a choice of buying separate jets which may be difficult to choose/expensive and trying to shim the stock jet needles, or buying a jet kit with jetting designed for a pipe also. That means you'd have to choose leaner jet needle settings that could very well work but the main jets/pilot jets/air jets they supply would almost certainly be too rich, even the leanest of the choices in the kit. So you'd probably end up buying the kit just for the needles and still end up buying the remaining jets separate.
Not sure if I'm explaining it simple enough but I see trouble in trying this.
