Carb issues

New 2 the site. I can't believe it, a site for GS enthusiasts. Lovin it! I have a 1982 GS1100E and am experiencing some issues in the process of revitalizing it. I just replaced the intake boots because of cracking and heat exposure from living in the Ca heat. dispite removing the bank of carbs and re-alligning the boots, the bike will only idle w/ choke applied. bike will stall w/ the slightest application of throttle and the idle will change when i spray carb cleaner around the intakes during idle. I'm assuming an air leak. I've angled the intake boots to what apears to be the right angles multiple times. I couldnt find anyone willing to "touch an older" bike and attempting to stay within budget (minimal), I'm doin it m'self. N E suggestions? I've got a million questions, sorry bout the long *ss posting. Thanx all. Rick

Check the intake boots I believe their is a rt & left Put them on the carbs & position them so the are level Then install to the engine & tighten the clamps.. ARE you trying to run it without the air box ??? It will not run The BS type carbs that are on your bike are very sensitive to air flow. Having to run the bike with the choke, the carbs probably need a good cleaning

In addition to Lynn's advice...do your manifolds have o-rings in them?
Are the replacement manifolds new? Your test proves you have an intake leak which must be fixed first.
If after fixing the leak, the bike still has the problem, then I would clean the carbs with special attention to the pilot circuit. A bad diaphragm(s) will also cause the bike to accept no throttle. Hopefully it's the other things because the diaphragms are expensive. Welcome to the GSR.

Had the exact same issues today on my '76 GS400. Bike would only idle with the choke on and couldn't apply any accelerator. Didn't try the carb fluid around the manifolds, but I didn't need to. I could see moisture squirting past the manifolds. As I can't get new manifolds for my bike and the manifolds are rubber with no O-rings, I solved my problem by inserting a gasket between the manifold halves (one half comes off the carb, one half is a block - the two bolt together into the head). As soon as I sealed the leak, my problem went away. Good luck! I only have 2 carbs to worry about. -Will
