    dead... on the highway

i was about 3 miles from home, coming down a hill and suddenly rpms drop , i gear down and it completely dies and i role to a stop, try to crank it, ignition seems dead but after a couple of minutes it attempts to crank again, i can here it trying really hard and once in a while it would sound liek it was about to crank over but then it completely died , nothing but battery. fuel tank is half full. 2 warning signs before, a lot of fluids leaked out the other day and i didnt have a chance to replace them. my oil level window is too dark to see anythign but i think i might have lost some oil. could this have caused the problem? and the other sign is that right before this happend i had pull on the front brake really hard and it was sluggish after. anyone have any ideas?

Drain it thru petcock on prime into a clean gas can so that you can examine it to see if there is alot of rust or take the tank off and turn it on its side and remove the two bolts that hold the valve on. If there is alot of rust in the tank It should be cleaned. The fuel petcock can be taken apart, rinsed off in gas or solvent and reinstalled

My bike didn't have any fluid problems, but when the stator kicked the bucket it acted just like yours did.
Running along at full revs, then it just drops, and drops, and nothing you do has any effect. The battery still has some charge, just not enough to kick over the engine.

Get out your multimeter and check the charging system.

GOD DAMNIT!!! i think the stator is completely busted, not generating any electricity it was good for liek 4 choke starts and then i broke down at my gfs house. is there anyway i can replace the diodes with out replacing the whole thing?

I doubt it! Check the stator papers elsewhere on the GS Resources site. Good reading. You'll find a trouble shooting guide that works great! I'm in the middle of trouble shooting my bike also. Good luck!

You can still follow the papers just "guesstimate" your RPM's. Assume about 1000 rpm for idling and extrapolate from there.
