    Tire size question - gs450

I have a 450L with 120 width tires in the rear (stock size) can anyone tell me if a 130 width tire will fit without mods? I know the bigger gs's have 130's in the back. I would like a little extra in the back end if I can swing it.

I have an S model (identical to an E mechanically), not an L but I can tell you that I could not get a Dunlop GT501 120/90-18 on the back. Something like 4.75 in. wide. Had to exchange it for a 110/90-18. Might have been able to fit a 120/80-18 but I didn't try. I've been very happy with the Avon Roadrunners AM20 90/90-18 front and AM21 110/90-18 rear. Tons of grip and hardly any wear after 6000 miles. I think we have the same swing arm and the 110/90-18 rear is only about about 0.25in. away from the swing arm on both sides at the widest point of the tire. 110mm is supposed to be 4.25in. but my tire is closer to 4.4in wide. But, my rear wheel is 18in. and yours is what, 16in. or 17in.? These bikes are light enough that you probably don't need a bigger than stock tire. I think the stock size was measured in inches, not metric sizes. My stock rear was a 3.50-18 Continental. Also the rims are narrow. If you go with a wider tire on a narrow rim you might have problems with the profile not being right and end up with some weird handling and wear pattern.

If you use the search feature you should find more info. Thought I'd chime in since no one else has. Most of the guys on this forum ride four-bangers

      120 might be about it.

I think suzuki put the largest they can put on the L model before we think of doing it anyway.

      The sport & E model has 3.5 right. The L has 120.

I have 100/90x19 front and rear is 120/90x16 on 16x2.15 rim. The rear tire is new, the front is dry rotted so I'm shopping for a front. I was thinking about replacing the rear as well to get a matched set, plus some posters seem to not like the Cheng Shin brand. If it is a crap tire I would feel better just getting a better one.
Has anyone used the Pirelli MT 66 Route tires? The price seems right and I have had good experience with Pirelli car and truck tires.

I like my Chen Shin Barracudas 1million% more than the Kendas (Challenger) I had before. I may not know what an awesome tire is, but I know I wouldn't recomend Kenda to anybody.

When I was shopping I did some reading and found lots of guys liking the Dunlop K591 which has been succeeded by the

DUNLOP GT501 I bought a rear in 120/80-18 but it wouldn't fit. It was a very impressive looking tire.

Exchanged it for the Roadrunners and can't complain about them.

            * Successor to the K591 sport tire, the V-rated GT501 features bias-ply construction and incorporates a radial-style tread pattern for contemporary styling and a larger footprint.
            * An optimized profile creates a larger contact patch for increased cornering confidence, with smooth side-to-side transitions.
            * Increased tread-to-void ratio delivers superior grip in dry conditions, with no loss of grip in wet weather.
            * Increased center tread depth provides improved wear characteristics and enhanced water clearance.
            * New rear compound increases grip and wear resistance.

Made a mistake, the front rim is 2.15 wide, I can't remember what width the rear rim is, but it is a 16 inch.

120/90x16 seems to be a hard size to find. Pirelli route and dunlop gt501 seem to only have 130/90x16. Can anyone tell me if they have tried this on a 450L? Maybe I will have to get the 120/80 instead.

                bump...
I am about to buy tires and I need to know if anyone with a 83-86 450L has tried a 130/90x16 on the rear. I really like the Battlax and the Pirelli Route66 tires, but both come in that size only.
I did find a Bridgestone G534 rear tire in my size, but it does not have a matched front that will fit. I would prefer to have matching tires.
                Need advice

I have 87 GS450L and the rear tire that is on now is 120/90/16, but it rubbs the chain. I'm getting new IRC tires 100/90/19 front and 120/90/16
its hard getting mached tires with the exact size for this model bike.

As long as we have a tire question going I'm basically tire stupid. I have a '81 GS850 and not happy with tires on the bike and want to change them (They are Dunlop and I don't know the size or model). The question is what would anyone recommend as a good tire for fair weather riding and have good handling.

                      gs450 tires

After looking and getting frustrated in my local bike shop, trying to find a set of matching tires for my gs450l (90/90x19 front and 120/90x16 rear) I finally found that Continental makes a tire set that will fit. Its the Continental-Blitz.
I do not know much about Continental tires but will give them a try.
The front will be 90/90x19 with a s speed rating which I would imagine it should be ok.

                        tire manufacturers

The Dunlops are a decent tire with solid sidewalls.. keeps them from going too squirrelly when flat... the Conti's are a good brand and have been around for quite a while... perelli's should be good I was looking at the 66 for my 78 550..

when trying to go wider the tire may fit the swingarm but the chain may be the biggest issue..

see if the suzuki mechs have installed wider rears... most of them are okay when you ask qurstions ( they are not working on commission) and you should get a decent answer..
