    Just bought 81 GS750 need carb, brake and oil leak help.

    Hi everybody I just purchased a 1981 GS750 that has been sitting for quite some time. I was able to get the engine to fire by spraying a little ether in the air box. The throttle is frozen solid and the carbs will need a cleaning. When i rebuild the carbs is there a recomended jet change that will make the bike run better. Where these carbs affected by emmissions jetting from the factory? Is there a prefered brand of rebuild kit for the carbs or a brand to avoid.

    The brakes have have sticky calipers and master cylinders. I had to remove the front pads to load it on the trailer.

    The head gasket apears to be leaking oil and it also has a small oil leak at the base gaskets. Is it worth my time to try and retorque the head or should i just replace the gaskets?

    Does any one know of a good supplier for parts other than the dealer.

    Sounds like the throttle cable is seized; that's no biggie. Hang it up and run some penetrating oil down it. Did you try the throttle shaft on the carbs to see if it's free? If not, I would guess the butterflies are stuck to the carb throats. That's no biggie either if you're taking them off to clean them. Unless, you're changing exhaust or going with open K&N's for filters, jetting will be fine.I don't know of emmisions jetting, all I know is the people with bikes made for the US seem to have the mixture screws plugged (at least thats what I gather from listening to the folks here) whereas my Can. bike never had the screws plugged. As for kits, I'll be getting mine from Dennis Kirk this winter as Suzuki wants alot for factory parts, but in my case I need 1 diaphram for sure and they don't seperate from the slide, so I have no choice.
    Brakes may be freed up with a c-clamp and work the lever to move the pistons out and press them back in with the clamp.Or just work them untill they pop out and inspect the insides.I say depends how stiff they are to govern which route you want to take.
    You could try to retorque the head but you may have no choice but to replace them.Try first and see what happens.

      Brakes need cleaning and new fluid.

      If the brakes are not releasing the return hole may be clogged. Im sure the rest of the system needs cleaning and new fluid, but make sure the return hole in the bottom of the resivoir is clean or the fluid will be trapped in the line and keep them locked up.

          Hi guys thanks for the replys. I tried to open the bleeders before I removed the pads, so the pistons must be stuck. I will probably put kits in the calipers and master (something about having know good brakes).

          I just bought a factory manual on ebay as soon as it arives I plan on starting on the repairs.

          I will keep ya posted and probably ask some more questions.

            If one of the butterfly shafts is frozen, that could be a problem; the only way to know is to pull the carb bank apart, which you'll have to do for a proper cleaning anyhow. It's pretty simple, really.

            Be sure to read through the Carb Cleanup pictorial here. You'll see what needs to be done.

            There's no need to buy repair kits, unless you have an inlet seat / needle in bad shape. Otherwise, they're really expensive & incomplete. You will need O-rings, and I just HAPPEN to know a guy who sellls kits:



            ... and there's a chance you'll need a bowl gasket or so. For those, I can recommend Cycle Recycle at:



            You should be able to scrounge up all the needed items for about $75 less than buying 4 rebuild kits. Toss in a gallon can of Berryman's, and you're on your way.
