I have a GS550E
The seller says it is an 83, the DMV says it is an 84, so that is what it is registered as....
Sometimes it just dies while riding it. It seems according to the info I read here that it needs a stator, or regulator, I will buy them both.
Bigger problem is...
It slips in second gear. The guy I bought it from says he was told it was the shims (?)
It seems to have gotten progressively worse since I bought it.
It never actually jumps right out of second gear, just skips.
It also seems that this happens only under torque, and at a certain range in the power band.
If I rev it really high in first, and it is over 6000 RPM's when it hits second, you dont see it. If you keep the RPM's under 3500 RPM's, you do not see it.
I like the bike but want to buy a used SV 650 this spring.
I am gonna have to sell this one first though, and no one is gonna buy it like this.
The bike shops are saying very expensive tranny work, but it seems to me that since it is only in second gear, it can not be THAT BAD!
I have the service manual for it, and am able to use a garage for the winter if I am able to fix it.
Should I sell it and cut my losses, or fix it up?
It has about 40,000 Kilometres on it.
I only paid $850 CDN for it, and at that time I could work around the second gear issue, but it is getting worse.
Plus I have to fix whatever electrical issue it has, probaly stator....
I think it would be worth about $1500 in Edmonton AB where I live if I fixed it up, but am not sure if it is worth doing.
Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
Thanks for looking.
