    Second Gear skipping

    Hi all;

    I have a GS550E
The seller says it is an 83, the DMV says it is an 84, so that is what it is registered as....

Sometimes it just dies while riding it. It seems according to the info I read here that it needs a stator, or regulator, I will buy them both.

    Bigger problem is...
It slips in second gear. The guy I bought it from says he was told it was the shims (?)
It seems to have gotten progressively worse since I bought it.
It never actually jumps right out of second gear, just skips.
It also seems that this happens only under torque, and at a certain range in the power band.
If I rev it really high in first, and it is over 6000 RPM's when it hits second, you dont see it. If you keep the RPM's under 3500 RPM's, you do not see it.
I like the bike but want to buy a used SV 650 this spring.
I am gonna have to sell this one first though, and no one is gonna buy it like this.
The bike shops are saying very expensive tranny work, but it seems to me that since it is only in second gear, it can not be THAT BAD!
I have the service manual for it, and am able to use a garage for the winter if I am able to fix it.
Should I sell it and cut my losses, or fix it up?
It has about 40,000 Kilometres on it.
I only paid $850 CDN for it, and at that time I could work around the second gear issue, but it is getting worse.
Plus I have to fix whatever electrical issue it has, probaly stator....
I think it would be worth about $1500 in Edmonton AB where I live if I fixed it up, but am not sure if it is worth doing.
    Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
    Thanks for looking.

well the tranny can be fixed very reasonable if you do it your self, but the electrics a few hundred depending on the route you take, its really your call whats your time worth? keep in mind that once you open up an engine that there is usally something else that is always need gaskets seals, sealers cleaners, and the right tools and torque wrench

This all depends on how much time and how much money you want to invest into your bike. Anything can be fixed, but you need to draw a line in the sand, versus what the bike is worth. If you have a bike thats worth $800, and is in fair condition dont go spending $700 just to reliably fix it up. Sounds to me like you bike was thrashed hard and not maintained. As far as your skipping in second gear, check the simple things first, like correct chain tension. Pull the front sprocket cover, and make sure the front sproket is in good shape. If the bike only does the skipping in second, and not first, it's an issue inside the tranny. That can be like opening up a can of worms. If you plan on fixing the tranny yourself, than it might be worth fixing. If you plan on having a dealer fix it, the repair cost will FAR exceede the value of the bike.

        Thanks for the advice guys.
I work outside of the area I live, so I maybe I should just sell it for parts.
        Thanks for the input
