How much $$ do you want to spend?

I have EBC on my gs and it's fine. Not sure of the wear yet, but I put over 20k on her and they still seem fine.
Bike Bandit, dennis kirk or Cycle recycle are decent places to get them from. However, I've found that my local dealers are usually competitive in price - but may have to order them. So I guess it depends on how quickly you need them.

Check eBay. You can get EBC for 10 dollars a pair sometimes. If you can get three sets and combine shipping it is a gret deal
versrah pads are supposed to be better but I never tried them.
1981 GS650G , all the bike you need
1980 GS1000G Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely

I guess my real question is what is the best kind as gar as far as the compounds they are made of.

EBC pads are OK if you don't ride in the rain. If you do, this type of organic pad will give poor results when wet. EBC doesn't make sintered pads for these old bikes.

The DP205 (front) and DP203 (rear) recommended by Einar J Skog is a good choice because it is a sintered (metal) pad. It will give equally good stopping performance wet or dry. Sintered pads may cost more than other pads, but give better performance, wet or dry.

The only other manufacturer that I know of making sintered pads for these old bikes is Vesrah. The Vesrah VD-322JL (front) and VD-306JL (rear) should work for your bike.

I ride in the rain frequently, and feel that it is unsafe to use standard pads in these conditions. I have a set of Vesrah sintered pads on order for my bike.

I prefer the Vesrah pads. I will also use the EBC pads but I get noticeably better stopping from the Vesrah pads, about the same wear rate as EBC pads or better and they don't squeal as much as the EBC pads for me. The cost is basically the same. All depends where you buy them.
