Can you tell me the proper engine numbers for that bike. Should any of the numbers correspond with the VIN?

Engine serial no's as far as I know (someone else may know more than me on this one) give the engine size, year of manufacture and the series number and thats it. In my case that means GS75 (GS750) X (1981) and the build number 148, blah blah blah. You should be GS11 or GS110 (GS1100) D (1983) etc. etc. The frame will have the serial no. of the completed unit year, model, and build number of the unit itself. I can't tell you much more myself.

I just looked and I am GS110X. I guess I have a 81 motor in an 83 bike. Am I losing out on any power ? I have an oil cooler. How is an 81 engine oil cooled. They did not start that till 83. I am confused.

Just in case I'm wrong on the 'X' thing in the engine vin ( in Europe, they were GSX's not plain GS) the easiest way to tell is the 80-81 engines were polished aluminum on the cases whereas the 82 had black accents and the 83's were mostly black with polished accents. 82 and83 cam cover ends are black krinkle coat with 3 fins and the 80-81 ends were chrome. Just for my own curiosity I'm going to visit a friend later and I'll look at his 83 and see what numbers he has (I know his engine is origional to his bike. The 81 1100 motor has around 90 or 92 horse, good for low 11 second 1/4's and I'm not sure how much more the 83 will have(I'll have to visit my Mum's and look in the archives in the attic).
The oil cooler is most likely an addon like on my bike and I don't remember a factory cooler on any Suzuki untill the 83 750's and I think 550's also (I could be corrected here too). How it works is taking oil off the pressure side of the filter housing and runs through the cooler and back into the engine; that's the condensed version of operation. The engine isn't oil-cooled like the GSXR series, the system just has an oil cooler to help the oil from getting too hot.
I hope I'm helping and not confusing you as I don't explain what I mean properly sometimes.

All GS1100E's from 1980 thru 1983 engine numbers started with the prefix GS110X-. Suzuki stopped recording the actual numbers for specific model years after 1980 so you can only tell by appearance. If your engine is all black it's most likely an '83, unless of course it's been painted.
