regular carbs vs smoothbores
I have an 83 gs1100e and right now it has the stock carbs and recently I have been talking to a guy and he wants to sell me a set of smoothbores and what I would like to know is exactly what is the difference between the two and what kind of performance can I expect from these smoothbores do I have to do any other mods. when putting these carbs on and what is a standard price for these he says they are worth 1000 dollars this is in canada any help would be greatly appreciated......thanks.......markTags: None

are smoothbores the same carbs as the ones as the GSXR-1000 slingshot carbs? If they are I can probably get you an entire 84 GS1150 for around 1300$CDN that has them already. This bike most likely needs a new head but it does put out 130HP when its running...

I have seen a good set of 33mm Mikuni smoothbores go for $300 US (about $400 Canadian, I believe) and less. $1000 Canadian is way too much! The smoothbore does not have a butterfly to disrupt air flow thus allowing more air into the engine which inturn (with the correct amount of fuel) allows for increased horsepower. Combined with a good header and pod filters the increase can be remarkable.

You can get a brand new set of Mikuni RS Flatslides with accelerator pumps for about $600 US, they are smoothbores. Slingshot carbs are still CV type carbs, not smoothbores. I'm running RS flatslides on my '85 GS700E and they made a huge difference over the stock CVs. You do have to roll the throttle a little to keep from bogging down since the throttle acts directly on the slides whereas CV carbs rely on vacuum to raise the slides. You will need a push-pull throttle assembly with smoothbores.
