How to check oil level GS650

Can any one tell me how to check the oil on the bike and what position should the bike be on straight up or leaning. thank you.

It should be straight up with both wheels on the ground is the way I do it, or check it on the centerstand WITH the rear wheel touching the ground

If you just changed the oil drive it for a minute and then check it after it settles. The level changes a bit.

BTW there are three drain plugs on the 650. One on the pan, one on the filter and one near the shift lever for the output shaft.

Lynn, you mentioned on the center stand with the rear wheel touching....I have been checking mine on level ground and on the center stand, but the rear wheel has been off the ground. How much of a difference will this make, my manual says that I am doing it the right way?

It won't make much difference. As long as you can see oil in the window with the bike straight up on the stand or on the ground your fine.

Thats kinda what I figured. No oil equals big problem, too much equals big problem. Towards the top of the fill line is a good thing!

This came up about a year ago. I had been taught to check, with both wheels on the ground, balancing the bike as straight up as possible. After being told this was incorrect, I read the shop manuals for Suzuki GS 1150, Honda CB 1100 F, and Kawasaki KZ 1300, all of them said bike should be on level ground & on the center stand. It will take 1/4 to 1/2 qt more oil to fill the crankcase, when bike is on center stand.
