    motor sound after an overheat

Hi last winter I completely rebuilt the head of my gs 1150 1984 .

I ran the bike for all the summer 2005 with no problem until the D day

I was going to work and the traffic stop, hoho ! 33 degrees Celcius

So I was stocked at the same place for 30- 40 min. the bike start to smoke and my heat indicators (the gauge and all my body) indicates that some troubles was evident . the temperature on the gauge was between 100 - 110 celcius .

the bike was really hard to get foward and always stalling each time I give her some gas.

So since that damned day each time I start the engine I can hear a little sound (tic tic tic tic.....) very clearly at the start ,less when the bike is hot but always there now.

I know I don't give enough details but for those who knows or heard a story like this before and can help me maybe this story is long enough.

all details from you can give me a hand to repair this stupid D day

thank you for all your help on this .

after my bike sits for a week I get a little tic...tic...tic only on startup.I think its related to cam endplay,or possibly oil not being pumped to the top immediatly. It doesnt effect the performance any.I would like to know why though.Maybe a shim problem or valve?I havent a clue.

I bet the next time traffic is stopped your gonna pull over and wait it out. If I can't sneak up the side lane I cut the engine. But as to your problem, I would check the valve clearances again and maybe compression when it's warm, just to be sure. IF the compression is still good and the valves are OK don't worry about it.

Matrix, to be honest, 100-110C is nothing to be too worried about. That's roughly 212-230*F, which should be within decent operating range of any motor, especially an air cooled one. Unless it was up a bit higher than that, I would doubt that overheating was what caused your problem.

Most likley if it was indeed overheated It could have scored a piston. Not likley but ??? First thing to do is change the oil & just ride it

            too hot

Do what Lynn says but check the old oil for silver streaks in it and take the filter and cut it open and look for silver particules, if alot there maybe some piston damage, a very very very small amount is normal of you go a long time between changes

Once you overheat an engine, I was told, in rather heated language that the oil ring looses its spring. I have also seen engines that have overheated that burn a lot of oil because of this.
Is this an old farmer's tale or is it fact?

when i get home, the week after I change the oil and the filter ,I can't remember if I found metallic parts in the oil and I put some synthetic oil in it.

                same sound

and what I was proud about my bike was that the bike didn't have a cut wire , zero rust (even in the tank) ,no scratch a very good bike in good condition.

I have an extremely technical solution to your problem if you are commited to fixing it. Prepare yourself...

                  Use ear plugs!

After at least 12 years of GS ownership I have learned that the worst thing I can do is listen closely to the engine. These old air cooled mills make lots of nasty noises, all the time. It can be scary. The reality is that if something is really wrong you will most likely feel it- as in loss of power or flat spots, maybe hard starting. Keep an eye on your gas milage. A change in fuel effecincy is a dead give away. Smoke is another giveaway. A truely overheated engine will typically blow smoke badly.

All I am saying is that it is easy to get obsessed by engine noise, but strange noises come and go all the time on these bikes.

thank you for all your answers ,i'll put some ears plug this summer cause i'm not be able to pay the immatriculation next summer (2007) .

the government wants to stop motorcyclist in Quebec,Canada .

the last news was :immatriculation up to 1200$ CAN for only 6 month of riding (because of winter)

                    to expensive for me !

if they change the law my bike gonna be for sale for sure !

Does that mean insurance? I've heard alot of Canadians saying the insurance is really high there.

That's just wrong! Why are they so much against motorcycles?

                      ???

I think they don't want no more motorcyclist on the road ,too much accident with the racers (bikes).

Here (i don't know in usa) we have a second insurance for all the people who drives ( car, bikes, vtt , motocross) and we pay that in the immatriculation you have no choice .

And when or if you have an accident your personal assurance pay the bike an for others and the government insurance pay for you while you are at the hospital ect...

So now they took all the money for the SAAQ(society insurance automobile of quebec) and they put the cash away in other society.

now they can tell that they don't have enough money too pay and ask people for more money to fill up the saaq bank .

                        that's why they want :

racers : 1232$ CAN for immatriculation
more than 700 cc 1000$ CAN

                        etc
                        etc
                        etc

so I don't know yet in which category my bike goes ....sport touring or
                        race

                        or

How much for a 700cc and more

I tried to explained the best I can but in fact it's almost the story.
